I heard there are problems with the DPF is this still the case?

Cheers

There is no problem with remapping them but you can only take them to 195bhp unless dpf removed, if dpf removed you can get up to 220bhp.

If the dpf is removed does this not put light on dash on, or affect amything else?

DPF removal is not so simple, you need a suitable pipe to replace the DPF and you also need a tuner who knows how to turn off the sensors using the ECU data. A good remap will produce around 200 bhp without DPF problems, this produces a good power gain but this engine can drive more like a petrol (all the power is in higher RPM band)

Is there a plug in PD tuning box available for the 170bhp, i have seen a few advertised on Ebay but was unsure of how good they are?

I would advise not to get a tuning box because they can cause problems, you can get a replacement pipe from Allard and then tuning is not a problem. At the end of the day it depends on how much power you want. A good tuner would be able to custom map what you want.

Revo are still working on their software, but they seem to be quite a popular choice for tuning normally.

Allards replacement pipe you are talking about is to remove the EGR system not the DPF.

The only problem IMO with the maps that only go to 200bhp becuase of the DPF is that a lot of the 170s are actuallys 180s as standard so 20bhp is not much gain for the price you will be paying......

But suppose 20bhp is still a useful increase.

I've also heard good things about the Tunit box - easy to remove when you have a service too.

If you put a good air filter/inducton kit on you can also get them upto 215bhp

Scuse my ignorance, but what is a DPF? and what does it actually do? How does it effect performance?

Many Thanks

DPF is a filter that captures the soot which usually comes out the exhaust. It is only on the 170ps version engines (i assume as they smoke more) once the filter starts to be come clogged with all this soot, the ecu injects more fuel into the engine to increase the engine exhaust temperature to around 350 degrees where it then burns off the soot caught in the filter, this produces a whiteish smoke/powder.

This makes the engine cleaner than ordinary non-dpf engines and they don't produce anywhere near as much black soot smoke all the time.

The downside, is increasing engine power increases the soot released from the diesel which means the filter clogs quicker / harder / faster so may not clean properly therefore clogging the engine and a dealer fit of a new dpf ££££'s

Remove the dpf, and you'll get a shed load of tuning options as you don't have to worry about soot output, however the dpf is linked to the ecu quite well, so its not something cheap/easy to remove.

Thats great. Thanks alot for the quick and detailed response.

I have another question. What is the difference between the 140 and the 170 diesel? IS it just a different engine map or si there alot more to it then that? I originally wanted the 170 but also wanted the dsg, so had to settle for the 140 to get the dsg box.. would of loved the 170 though, for the extra power and tunning opertunities... can u get the same power of the 140 as u can out of the 170?

You can tune the 140 to give more power than the 170 .. i think the 140 goes to about 185. (although you can tune the 170 to around 200 - 210)

The difference between the engines is all down to the injectors it uses. The 140 is standard PD injectors .. the 170 has piezo injectors.

p.s. this is *only* information which i have read over time on this site, i could well be wrong, please feel free to correct anything i may have got wrong (which might be all of it! )

Thats about right , if your pockets are deep then you can follow devonmikeboy power outputs for the PD140 base unit >350hp. My 170 produces around 202 - 210hp, I have come across threads from Dutch tuners that have got around 280/290hp [SEAT racing Leon diesel produces around 285]

Im hopefuly putting my standard 170 altea on the rollers tomorrow, so Il have a base line on how much power any remap gets me.

Does anyone know what % the transmision loss is? I asume It has same box as the leon fr's
