Clutch Pedal Question - advice needed

Driving yesterday and the clutch pedal went on my car. The pedal was well and truly stuck to the floor.

Anyway got it to a local garage down the road who welded the pedal back but said as its been welded back together it wont be as strong as it was before and to get a new pedal.

Now I phoned up Mr Clutch today who want to have a look at it. They said on the phone that it sounds like I will need a new pedal box as well as a new pedal and that i would be looking at £750-£800.

Does this sound right or are they trying to pull down my pants?

Ha, that to me sounds like they're absolutely having your pants down!!

When mine went on my old Cupra; it was about £38 for the part from Seat. And - thinking back - im sure that price was for the pedal box, it was a while ago though! Even so, it cant be £800!! :think:

Hi,

The reason the pedals go is because the weld put on at the factory was total rubbish, all they put on is a couple of spot welds which dont last long (as many people have found out).
As long as the person who re-welded it for you did a decent job then it will be much stronger than standard and will last for the rest of the life of the car.

If the garage want to fit a new pedal then either they are ripping you off, or they know their welding job was shite!! Unless the pedal was damaged in anyway then I cant see any reason for it to be replaced.

The place that welded it was different to the place I phoned. I phoned Mr Clutch as they seemed the place to phone but I was stumped when they said they reckoned that I would probably be looking at that much:blink:

I got the welding done at Humphries at of all places, It just so happened they were nearest when the clutch pedal went. They guy that did it has worked with clutches for 6 years and has a golf 20vt that has had the same problems.

He showed me the bracket that had snapped and told me about how they only do 2 spot welds to start with. He welded it all round to try and get it to hold but he did say he couldnt gurantee how long it would last but would do the job for a while till I could get another one.

He said it was because of the weld he was using, it was just like a blow torch connected to a gas cylinder with a blue flame and he said it wouldnt be as strong as getting it 'properly' welded but that was all he had.

He said Mr Clutch would be the best place to try so I tried them. Im gonna shop around.

But like I say the guy who welded it doesnt know how long it will last as it is so he advsied getting it changed but he doesnt work for Mr Clutch

I reckon you should fook 'Mr Clutch' right off, and just go somewhere else and get it properly welded!

All I want is just it looking at and seeing whats what with it. Im getting my FMIC and I dont want it going on me on the way up there.

I like to think I know a 'little' bit about cars but clutches?, it just goes over my head mate:confused:

Hi dudes. i had same problem. the spot wld on the factory job is like pigeon shite. the weld job you have done will suffice. i went down the new pedal route-£34 i think from Ted J's at Barnsley.

Mr Clutch? that is a down right disgraceful attempt a ripping you kecks down.
Doing the pedal yourself is a bit tricky getting the return spring back in the right place, and every now and again i get a dash light flash at me, i obviously knocked a sensor down there. a tap on the break and its gone.:censored:[:@]:censored:[:@]:censored:[:@]:censored:[:@]:censored

remove the pedal by taking the d clips off at either side then slide the bar along till the clutch pedal drops off, take it to a local engineers and they will weld the flap back together for you for a fiver or so

Get another white clip for the end of the master cylinder if yours is knackered. then attach it all back together.
I used cable ties to compress the spring for putting it back into place.

Its a tricky job but can be done if you take your time

Theres a good guide on here somewhere.

any local garage should be able to weld it for you mate you dont need to go to a clutch specialist

Yeah I got it welded up at humphries by the matey there. He reckoned it was worthwhile replacing it as he said he couldnt gurantee me how long the weld would last. He showed me what he did, it was proper all over but he did say it could be 100,000 miles or it could be 10 miles. I dont think he wanted me to get the wrong impression and think it would last ages when he couldnt gurantee it.

He didnt mention about needing anything else which was what was strange as when I spoke to mr clutch, without even seeing the car they were like 'your looking at about 750-800' . :rolleyes:

I thought I could smell a rat somewhere. The guy at Mr Clutch was saying hes done a few of these cars before and its always the same thing....

Cheaper way would be to buy a new pedal box then take it to a local garage for welding and fitting. Cant imagine it'l be anymore that £50 for the fitting and welding


The cars driving fine now with the welded pedal. Ive got my Forge FMIC fitting on wedenesday so ill get that out the way 1st. What Ill do is get the local VAG specialist I use to look at it for me when I take it in forthe cambelt and waterpump which will probably be next week.

I trust the advice they give me and now use them instead of the dealers.

On the clutch pedel side of things £700 - £800 :lol:, Im guessing the weld will be fine as anythings got to be better than the crappy spot welds that came from the factory, If it was to go again look st cupra matts guide and whip it off yourself and get it welded up and just get a new clip from the dealers, or if need be i have 3 spare. literlly took 2hrs of my time and a 56p clip when mine went :D

When I got my cupra my pedal box was totally fubar'd. Got a new one for about £80ish. Fitting was quite a few hours labour but all in it was no more than £300 and I had some other things sorted at the same time. I bet a SEAT dealer would be cheaper than Mr Clutch for that.

sod that do it your self im no mechanic but i've managed to do it in 3 hours and all i brought was a new peddle box and fitted it myself your have to take out the clutch peddle and the break peddle and it should be easy from there on!!! try it you might supprise yourself!!! If the welding has been done right with a MIG welder and good penetration (no jokes!) then it will be stronger than before. I would see how the fixed pedal goes before replacing it.

yup mine went too - as probably everyone's has now. RAC came out to try and resolve it and said that SEAT did a rubbish spot weld in 2 places which had come undone. Local garage mig-welded (is that right? lol) all round and its tons better. £20 bill. end of.
