Checked my oil for the first time today (3000miles) and it is low, it also looks pretty gunky. What do you suggest topping it up with, it says they recommend "rotul" or something.
Is it 5W40 I need?

I think I got some 5w30. It says in the back of the manual. Got some from halfords think it was the castrol for VW/BMW 507.00.

I am sure someone will come along in a mo if this is wrong.

You can use any 5w30 oil that meets the VW 507.00 specification, in the 2.0 TDI 170 PS engine. It doesn't really matter what brand the oil is, provided it meets the above specification.

Hope that helps.

It says "repsol" that is just a make of petrol/oil more common in spain, like our petrol stations are bp/shell/esso etc.
The car was just filled with that particular manufacturers brand, like renault recommend elf.
Any 507.00 will do, most vw group seem to use castrol edge 507.00, previously called slx11 longlife.
