A/C fault?

Got in my Leon this morning to defrost the car and my A/C function wouldnt switch on. Its the type with the big screen with climate control. The symbol would appear on screen for a brief second then switch off. Everything else works fine but no A/C.
I'm guessing theres a fault but could it be an overide function for when its too bloody cold? Is there a fault mode a can carry out on these climate contol setups?
Any help is muchly appriciated. Phil .

It doesn't work at temperatures less than +5 centigrade.

Mine was on too this morning at 2 deg

When you hit the button to blast the front windscreen, there is a little snowflake on the display (which I promptly turned off lol)

Same prob happened to me. Mine was an abient temperature fault which is located in the bumper on mine (LCR 225 2005). The readings for the outside temp where reading anything between -45 degrees and +40 degrees. If you have VAGCOM you should be able to reset it but you will have to eventually cange the sensor.

It's a design feature to protect the system at freezing or close to freezing temperatures, I guess some components (compressor?) could be damaged if it tries to operate at these temps.
As R6_allan pointed out earlier it's in the owners handbook.
