alternator whine

I've had 2 ibizas now, one at 25k and my gti at 55k miles and both have had this sort of whining noise, sounds like an alternator bearing perhaps?

anyone had this problem.
Its not a belt because they have only been replaced approx. 5k miles ago.

Thanks, David.

I have the problem on my Toledo. Been told by the AA it's a common fault on the TDI, but not sure if he meant petrol models aswell, he just said it's a common fault. He also said it will work for a few more months but will then pack up without warning.

Sadly, i can't remember what he said it was. It was def' not the belt though. Don't know if that helps. I'm no expert on these things but, yes, worn bearings sounds the most likely cause. Someone with more knowledge will be able to confirm this though...

whining from the alternator is almost definitely the bearings, it's a sign of wear on the inner or outer race.
If you can get them out the bearings are very cheap to replace, there is generally a serial number on them which you can use to order new ones.

My mate had an interesting way of eliminating belts from an equation, he just chucked a tiny bit of talc powder on the belts and if that stopped the squeaking then they were what was causing it.
