I have this magical figure of 250bhp, if I get there I am happy.

Will this involve a shed load of cash, I have a budget of about 2-3k?

Mods so far just a green panel filter.

Cheers

hybrid turbo conversion will take to somewhere around 230bhp ish maybe a bit more then front mount and exhaust.

You'll need closer to £5k for a sure 250bhp. You'd be looking at about £2.5k for a very good hybrid turbo/manifold/exhaust setup - Then the remainder on front mount IC, and other bits. I have lots on mine, but I only surpass 250bhp when using NOS - The car has yet to get past 250 without NOS. These engines really are a money pit when it comes to getting up to and past 250 horsies, but they still appear reliable and economical as well. Bonus. :D

Sorry mate but 2-3 K will get you to about 220-230bhp with just engine mods without touching things like brakes, handling etc. Your stock FMIC is OK for the job by the way. To jump to 250bhp you will need more money but try 230ish bhp and you might find your happy with that if not just keep on saving and throwing your money in the bottomless modifying pit that is diesel tuning.

Yes I agree with that. Fueling is your limit at around 230 so you need to spend on LPG or uprated nozzles.

I'm hoping with honed injectors I can ditch my LPG system and fuel more than enough. Will help to get rid of the weight in the spare wheel well.

Watch this space for a powershot LPG kit for sale. :D

Just to let you know, on front wheel drive cars there's a maximum BHP figure you can have before the car's handling turns absolutly rubbish. This figure is 220BHP.

That's why the Alfa 147 (i think that's the one) handles so poorly. That's 240 BHP. The front tyres can't cope with all the torque and steering.

I can't remember who found out 220BHP was the max figure for FWD cars but i think it was Lotus.

If you take it up to 250BHP you car will be fast as hell in a straight line, but show it a corner and it will scream at you. The front tyres will smoke like hell and you will get no grip at all. Traction coltrol will help slightly but the exact same car with less BHP will go round the same corner much faster.

Just something to bear in mind...

D'you wanna tell that to Mazda and tell them that 260 is too much for their Mazda3 MPS. ;)

I wonder how they feel about that magical 220 figure being 40 horses behind them.

something to bear in mind 6 years ago maybe .. not anymore, look at the new leon cupra, they are putting out around 250 on a dyno, and 'reevo-able' to 310 no issues at all..

You have to remember that an engine also produces torque not just horse power, a car with 220bhp and 400ftlbs of torque will handle differently to a car producing 220bhp and 170ftlbs. Also depends on if the car has a decent traction control system, LSD, how it's mapped, driver ability etc etc

.

Bills car is nearly 300 horsies above this... its handling must be awful ... why does he race it?

Hmmm. I stand corrected then. lol. Anyway, it's good to see that 220BHP can be beaten on FWD cars. :D
