Actually we both agreed it was my opinion. I did it in my past and have decided never again. All those mods don't make it worth it. IMO.

These roundabouts you're so impressed with, what track were they on?

Horses for courses or track days. In fact why bother with a derv? Surely a DIEsel is for economy not performance? Where would you need uprated suspension on the public road?

See this is the problem with discussing anything about modifications.

IS fitting an OEM ARB from a different model the same as fitting Eibach ARB for example?

Fact remains I do a lot of early morning on very quiet dual carriageways with a LOT of roundabouts. I find the car grips better, handles better, responds to steering input faster and generally feels safer - that's irrespective of driving speed.

How fast i choose to go around a roundabout is down to how quickly I think i can do it safely within the speed limits of the roads i'm driving on. That includes traffic conditions, weather conditions and any other factors at the time.

Fact is without the changes i'd made to the suspension and brakes I couldn't do it as safely or as quickly.

Whether you think i'm a safe driver or not is a completely different discussion to whether modding is a mugs game.

I also have a fairly extensive Hifi install, i don't play it loud in town centres, it's for me to listen to at high volume when i'm on a motorway doing a late night trip - again the standard stereo is fine, but for me, mine is better because it sounds nicer at whatever volume i care to play it at irrespective of the music I play.

Apply that theory to the car, i don't want to drive at 152mph anywhere, i don't want to play traffic light grand prix on a daily basis, what I do want is a car that i can trust to do whatever I ask it to do when I ask it to do it.

As for your comment on Dervs why bother, you went for a remap and didn't use it - hence 600miles per tank - there's no way i ever get that, then again ALL my mileage at the moment is Urban - i'm getting about 180 miles more to a tank than I ever got in a petrol. Since the car was paid for outright, it's ALL about the running costs day to day, I can drive however i like and still put only one tank a month in.

We each buy our cars for different reasons, some subjective, some quantitive - either way a car is for what we want it for, not f or what other people might want it for. I like my diesel, i like the way it delivers power and I like to drive - i don't really care what diesel or petrol are meant to be for in the eyes of others:)

I was basically called a liar for saying I got those figures. I actually got a 700 mile tank once, with Revo.

I still think it's mugs game. A waste of money. The money you spend is not worth the extra performance you would get. Maybe with the exception of a remap. Then you have to consider upgrading other parts to cope and I'm not just talking about the clutch. Is it worth it?

Would you take these roundabouts the same with a copper behind you?

You know what, i was going to right out a long explaination and answer for you Andy, but i cant be bothered, i cant be bothered to lower to your level.
You obviously have a problem if your still thinking of a post i did 4 months ago, but if you read the rest of that post, most if not all agreed to my post.. and again like here, the majority refused yours...
I think you should sell your Leon and get another Saxo VTR you have the argumentive mannerisms of an owner of that type of car... but of coarse you wont mod it, thats a mugs game, heck in my opinion, parting with money for a saxo is a mugs game in itself! But thats just my opinon....which you will find hard to believe i bet..

Edit:
AS for coppers i have actually, no law to break doing 30mph around a roundabout...

I had my Saxo 10yrs ago.

Not a popularity contest.

I'm not keen on being called a liar either.

I was just saying the same thing whilst chatting with Nic, i've taken roundabouts at healthy speeds, the police don't notice because the car doesn't look like it's being driven too fast because it's not out of control whilst being driven.

Excately do the same thing in a OEM suspension set up Leon and your be pulled over, as the car would sliding and swerving all over the place...

Well, i didnt call you a liar, i said i find it hard to believe and so did Mork, as even he stated that you must off drove the car to the brink of no fuel, which is VERY bad for a TDi i might add, plus you overfill too, which i would also add, most of the bikers on this forum would advise against as diesel on the road is one of the biggest problems with bikes crashing...
It was up to you how you took it, i only meationed that its hard to believe on what people call a normal tankful 55L and not your 60L that you did that mpg.

Now back to the point in hand on this thread, and you just sit back and wait for your next attempt to post on something that has nothing to do with whats being asked, to post "hard to believe" or "mugs game" type post, to try and get me to look like a liar.

I've explained my mugs game comment and stand by it.

I was quoting you with the "hard to believe" line, not nice though eh?

Yeah and I've explained my comment, and i stand by it, along with the higher percentage of the forum users.

A Quote from 4 months ago, get over it. I wasnt alone in the disbelief or the questioning of your claim.

So I'm a liar?

Different driving styles that much is very obvious.

Take what you want from it... i personally find it hard to see 700 miles from a tank,
I had the car after clutch work and had to granny it around to bed it in, and i did a full tank no, overfilling, and i stop at the light, i got 480, maybe another 80 miles to kill my fuel pump and block my injectors with the **** on the bottom of my fuel tank, but no more, so to come on and say you get 700 odd, you can see the disbelief, thats an average of 175miles per quarter of a tank, even before my remap and bedding in, i only got 130-40 max, and thats sub 1500 rev changes and 6th gear cruising at no higher than 60-65..
and in the 2.5 years of ownership and talking to all the TDI owners i met in that time, not once has one claimed to done 700miles to a tank...but then most would never drive to the point of empty tank or over fill to the level you do, so maybe the fueling is the obvious difference.

I was going to right a long post and explain why I started modding but I am not going to bother as its you Andy and you frequently talk carp without any justification.

I have been in Slick's and Unclefester's cars and as I said before they are the two best Leons i ever been in. Tasteful modding to its fullest.

If you are going to remap it get the clutch uprated first. My clutch slipped after map.

So - back to the upgrades, if you had to choose just five mods which would they be and why :)

Anti Roll bars
Ungrade to 312mm TT brakes (upgrade in pads and disks Ds2500 etc)
Upper and Lower Struts
Remap
Uprated Clutch

I think the above would do the most improvement to a standard car, it would sort out all the areas that it needs too.. Suspension, power and stopping...i would say change the tyres, but thats more of a maintence thing, to keep in mind once you come to change the tyres...

After that its personal preference i think... plus things really start to get expensive...

What about you Pat, what you reckon?

I'd not bother with the shocks and springs, the standard suspension is fine - for me it's this;

1. rear ARB above all else - front as part of a kit if you can afford it
2. Uprated clutch as soon as the OEM one fails
3. 312mm disc upgrade wth DS2500 pads as the OEM 288mm are frankly dangerous given that the car is sold as 'sporting'.
4. Remap - the other things really should be done first.
5. Recaro seats - the standard LC Tdi ones aren't supportive enough when you're cornering.
