i am currently lookin for a 16v as well, there are not alot goin about that are in good nick from wat i have seen, i might have to settle for an 8v:(

if the engine has been maintained well and has a full service history, it should be ok, but it really is a hit or a miss!!!! the last car i bought i phoned the dealer that had stamped the service book to double check it really had been done!!!! i am paranoid about buyin rubbish cars tho:happy:

went to look at it, the engine looks and sounds good! drives nice... bodywork is ok but a few marks.... unfortuntly the previous owner had used a bike rack and it has left two quite bad scratches down the side of the boot! [:@]
managed to knock him down to £1200.... Havent bought it yet.

Best insurance quote so far for it is roughly £1000 tpft.

still dont know? wat do you guys think?

many thanks

I suppose at teh end of the day its always going to be abit of a gamble buying a second hand car. I bought an old crx vtec at the beginning of summer. Took it for a test drive everything was fine. Bought it and 10 mins into my journey home the gearbox packed in. Sometimes you just cant tell (or maybe its just me lol)
Take a risk and get it :p

There's a few of us out there looking for good valvers they are like hens teeth,

My last one was bought private in Glasgow with no service book (I'd come to the end of my tether after 5 months of searching), a fecked exhaust and generally ok condition, my mates thought I was nuts flying up there for a car i'd only seen 2 pics of but in the next 18,000 miles all I replaced was the fecked exhaust, front tyres, changed the oil a couple of times and did the belts for peice of mind and she never missed a beat so it is a gamble and can pay off if you are willing to take the risk!
if your buying it from a Garage it'll come with at least 3 months warrenty, buy it pull it apart and if anything does go wrong take it back!

Drive it for a few miles, some fast some slow, if the gearbox decides it doesnt want to engage 2nd or 3rd gear easily, its going to cost a couple hundred for a rep box and labour. If the box is fine then check the service history, timing belt change before 60k (if its done more than 60 and still been changed then fine) is very important as mine went very early on and wrecked the head of the engine totally. opper is a gorgeous colour when clean too, ask flapper.
The heatshield is an easy fix, either bend it out of the way or make sure all the umbrella screws are intact.

i would get the timing belt changed anyway as it has not been noted down in the previous services. how much would that be all in, parts and labour?

between 50-200 depending on who does it mate, the 16v is a hell of a lot easier than the 20vt engines and I got mine done with a waterpump replacement for 150 inc me sourcing the parts so labour was only 100.

MAte you've got some patience. When i was looking to change from my 1.4 to a cupra, i went to see my cupra. Took it for a test drive and bought it there and then  In hindsight should have at least looked at afew more but was too excited :)

Yes mate. I went from a 1.4 to the yellow beast lol. Too be honest both were in good condition, but i know what you mean.
I wanted a 16v but there were only 3 for sale in the country (according to autotrader) and like i said, i was too impatient. Still you wont regret going to a cupra.
Good luck.
