the clip is a little ring about an inch in diameter and fits in a groove on shaft in the splines which the cv joint sides down. the cv joint comes off complete youll understand when youve knocked the joint off when refitting slide the joint up the spines till it meets the clip then compress tap the joint down the shaft and the clip will dissapear again never to be seen till next time its stripped

I'm with you now. Thanks for your patience, I don't like attacking anything with a hammer unless I'm sure it's the right way. (The f*ck-up fairy is a frequent visitor)

So step one, with driveshaft in vice:
Hit in this direction and all will be revealed :D

First thing tomorrow

(the b*gger is that I replaced the inner joint last weekend. I was just finishing off and the balljoint bracket slipped out of the end of the end of the wishbone. When everything dropped, the wishbone end stuffed a hole in the outer boot. - see what I mean about the f*ck-up fairy )

Thanks for taking the time to explain it to me. :)

Nice one Dave, the guide looks spot on. Not an easy thing when your trying to guess your way through an unfamiliar job.

Cheers Carl!
Had I realised the joint 'pops' over the wire clip, this thread would have had a lot less dumb posts from me. I was smacking the outer rim of the cv joint for a while (as my post with arrow above before I realised that wasn't going to work either!

looks good, never knocked the joint of by the inner race before, but sounds a good idea and never stripped a cv joint down, if there is any doubt of condition we always replace with a recon joint. its not something you want letting go when you drop the clutch. could be a little messy. the most important bit when replacing the boot alone is to pack the old joint with all the supplied grease or youll be doing the job again sooner than you think

Thanks for your help! :)

When you think about it, the inner race bears directly onto the clip, so hitting that directly is going to get it off the easiest.

Stripping, cleaning and reassembly is a 5 minute job. I agree, any signs of abnormal wear and it's not worth refitting.
