Spent Thursday and Friday trying to buy a car, after some git in Swindon decided to not tell me the car we'd agreed a deal on had been sold, so had to do a bit of quick internet work to locate another one.

Anyway, found one in Scotland which I liked but the wife didn't want to travel very far, and when I phoned about it the salesman told me it was sold. Found one in Norfolk, but wife didn't like the colour and didn't want to travel very far. It needed a major service and cambelt which also put her off. Dunno why.... Found one in Sutton Coldfield which was kinda nice, but wife didn't want to travel too far (I see a pattern developing here) and when I tried phoning, no one answered the phone anyway. Found one in Bradford on Ebay but it had a private plate on it, and the guy wasn't selling the plate with the car but expected the buyer to take the car immediately at the end of the auction. So that wasn't going to work was it? Idiot. Found one in the midlands at a car megasite, and when I phoned about it the sales manager didn't even know he had the car in stock. Said he'd pull the details out and call me back. So I told him what I was prepared to spend (basically how much money I had) and waited for his call. Half hour later one of his minions calls me and starts trying to arrange a viewing etc. so I said that I needed to know whether they'd accept my cash offer before we went any further. He had to go and ask the sales manager, so that was good wasn't it. The answer was "No!" when he did come back. Wifey said it was too far to travel anyway.

So found one in Doncaster for about a grand more that I had to spend, phoned the bloke and explained the situation and he knocked £400 off. I said I had a few more calls to make and left him to it. He called back half an hour later and knocked another £400 off as we had no trade in and it was stock that needed moving etc. so we went down today and bought it. Managed to get the months tax that was on it, 3 months warranty, a set of brand new Seat floor mats, and a tank of diesel.

This is what we got in the end.

It's got the chrome mirrors, chrome tailpipe, Seat Sport gearknob, and a few other bits and pieces, so it's not too bad really.

It's the 2.0ltr TDI Sport. And oh, and it's got the engine cover aswell. I have to say it's quieter on the road than my Bora Sport 130 was, but I don't think it's just as quick really. Goes well, but having had the Bora from new and running it in by my own special way, I'm convinced that it was one of the quickest standard 130s on the road. It just flew when you wanted it to.

There's full service history with the car, as it belonged to the boss of Stoneacre Seat in Doncaster and was his company car. He's left full details of everything which has been done, even down to wipers, tyres, headlight bulbs being replaced and documented the mileage as they were done. He wrote a letter to the new owners giving personal history of the car and inviting them to contact him is there's anything we need to know. There's the original brochure from 2005, the computer print off of the price and order info stapled to it, and god knows what else. I've not read through all the stuff he's left us yet.

It's gonna get a wash and polish (Meguires) today, even though the seller had it valeted before we took it. There's always room for improvement in that area. Another bonus is that all the specs for that age car read that it has Traction Control, whereas it actually has the full ESP system. I don't know if people have been misquoting the specs when they were advertising theirs for sale, and they all have ESP, but I wasn't expecting it to be there.

All in all, I'm sort of pleased that we couldn't buy the one we were going to. I don't think we'd have been any better off really if we had.

Same as mine then although I have a few ponies extra ;). I do like that colour though, always been a lover of the bright blues ! The 2.0Tdi sport always has ESP it's one of the features that attracted me to it the first place, when you get chance in a safe place try it out as it's kind of strange but reassuring at the same time.

Yeah, I've had ESP on the Bora before this. Not often I got to make use of it, but it was interesting when it did start playing.

If you're in West Yorkshire, where did you get your extra horses from?

Car's had a good wash and Meguires polish this morning, and the wife noticed immediately when she came out to look. Apparently she was a bit disappointed with the paint finish yesterday when we went to pick it up but didn't say anything. Now, after 3 hours of wash and polish, she's happy with it.

Hi there Viking,

I just saw your post from the other day. Apologies for the car 'gazumping' tbh I didn't realise that you'd actually agreed a deal with the guy - he told me that I'd seen it first, so could have first refusal - didn't really think about it any more at the time. No hard feelings I hope!

Either way, looks like you did good in the end - your new ride looks very smart!

We also have something else in common - I now have VW Bora surplus to requirements (1.8T 180ps) It's still a great car, but not enough room for my recently expanded family. The other thing being, when I got 54mpg out the Altea from Swindon down to Surrey, I couldn't believe the economy by comparison. The wife thinks I'm getting old now banging on about mpg!

In speed terms the Bora is obviosuly faster (too fast for the roads round here :D), but the Altea still pulls great, plus I don't get kicked in the back anymore.

Anyway, glad it worked out in the end

P.S. if fancy another Bora, I promise not to sell it to anyone else....

Nah, no hard feelings at all. I'm pissed off at Paul H***son (that's who you bought from, isn't it?) cos he just stopped returning my calls and left me wondering what was going on. Also the bloke I'd arranged to go and view (a bloke off another forum) was wondering what was going on aswell. Left us both in the lurch. He still hasn't returned any calls to tell me personally that he's sold it

Just for your information, your car has had the recall done for the dodgy flywheel, so that's okay. And it was HPI clear incase you didn't check. Also there was a crash repair to the front not too long ago, but nothing serious.

I have to say, the one I got is really nice, now that it's been polished properly, so I reckon we both did okay. Swindon was a long way to go really.

Well, just phoned and booked the car in for a sevice. 70,000 miles lube sevice and check, plus brake fluid change........£80. How's that for a bargain?

£80.....:D

Sounds very good - considering that mine will be up for 60K service next year - and therefore will need the dreaded 'belt' - arrgghh....

Nope, not photo editing at all. Just a standard autofocus shot taken with a 4 year old Minolta camera.

Had the car serviced today. The dealer overcharged me.... by 58 pence. He couldn't explain how it happened, but given that I got a lube sevice (with 507.00 oil no less!) and brake fluid change for £80, I can stomach the 58p extra.

But I forgot to ask the guy how much for a set of GTI caliper carriers, disks and pads. Fancy a bit more stopping power.

Still, went next door to the Audi dealers and drooled over the 2 RS4's they had parked up on the forecourt. Oh, if only they made a diesel one......
