Hi there, good on you for looking for a Gti! One thing though, could you write in a legible font, I had to copy and paste your message so I could read it without going cross-eyed.

Bad points include rust in the rear wheel arches, a rattle from the heatshield in the engine bay and the windows dropping off their runners but don't let this discourage you from getting one.

They crop up on Autotrader, Pistonheads.co.uk, eBay fairly often so pretty much wherever you'd look for any other car should do the trick. Good luck finding one and post pics when you do. :)

Also keep an eye on the pedal box . These are prone to breaking/snapping due to the flimsy/rubbish design.

If its still in one piece i recommend that you drill and bolt it and also change the clutch cable. This causes the break!

was down at my local vw audi specialist last night and he reckons it's the clutch release plate. he says it tempers itself which is what makes the clutch so stiff and hence puts all the strain on the cable and the pedal box.

Could be that, but i changed my clutch cable last month and it is so much looser now than it was before, its still stiff alittle but these cars tend to have a stiff-ish clutch. Its so much easier to move and that now and since ive had it dont my pedal box aint broke again.

ahhh i just dont know

plates temper - extra long cables sieze and the design of the plate it pulls against in the pedal box is a bad unsupported design

ripple effect of converting a hydraulic clutch gearbox to manual - wish they'd left it hydraulic like the tdi myself

all solved with a decent welded gusset plate though

Mine was a nice fast, and surprised a lot of people. I had a load of problems towards the end of it's life... make sure you hear it start from cold, and make sure it'll run smoothly from cold (i.e. not cut out, stutter etc.). Check the windows go up and down very freely a few times, as said above - they're very prone to fail.

Other than that, it's just wear and tear to check for. They're awesome cars, so if you find a good one - you're going to love it ;)
