Hi,

Just bought a 1998 Ibiza 1.9tdi and there is a loud screeching squeeling noise which can be heard when the steering wheel is getting near to be on full lock/ Is this a problem with the power steering pump?

Cheers

It sounds like it, i had this issue a few months ago and as soon as i moved the steering wheel the screeching/squealing got louder n louder. Then one friday afternoon i came out to my car and found a massive puddle of powersteering fluid. It was cos the internals of the powersteering pump were knackered.

It may not be busted. All power steering pumps squeel when you are on full lock as the as it is working really hard. Mine squeels at full lock, my dads st200 mondeo does aswell..

It only happens when the wheels approach full lock and the turning motion becomes quite joulty!!

Sorry, but they don't all squeel. Mine got progressively worse, so changed the p/s belt, sorted, quiet again.

yeah if it was the pump it would squeel soon as u turn the wheel because the pump is workin.if its only wen ur near full lock it will be the belt because thats when it is at most tention and because its streched its loose and slipping.

I know what you mean, my MK2 does that everytime i put it on full lock go forward/back, think it could be a common thing.

when you say power steering belt do you mean the ribbed belt which is next to the cam belt attached to the alternator pwoer steering pump and coolant system or is there another belt somewhere?

Yep Power steering belt, mine was a very faint squeak on full lock but got all the belts changed at once as no record of the timing belt being done and it ran like a dream no more noise in the 30K before it died!

good way to see if its the belt is talcum powder, give it a little sprinkle ove the belt and if it stops squaking then you know what it is.

My Mk2 Ibiza makes a slight screeching sound when i turn the wheel. (Not on full lock) It's more noticeable in reverse, sometimes is worse than others, and it doesn't always do it.

Is this the power steering pump? How much would this cost to fix? Also, is anyone else's power steering slightly "heavy?"

I used to drive a Honda Accord and the steering was so light when i drove the Ibiza it felt like a tractor. lol. I almost thought it didn't have power steering and someone put a power steering reservoir in for a laugh :p, but then i drove a Citroen AX with no power steering and realised the Ibiza did have power steering, but it's not very good. Either that or it's faulty. The steering on my GF's Toledo is lighter than my Ibiza...

Cheers for the help.
