Hey guys, I have a 1.9tdi 53 plate Ibiza. Its the 130 bhp version. On the trip computer it is only reading about 28-30 mpg on avergae. Obviously i should be getting alot more than this! Does anyone know what the problem might be?

Cheers Daz :D

is your driving round town or motorway,

what speeds?

when do you change gear?

Also have you reset the mpg counter and see what you get?

Try taking it out of first gear? but on a serious note, if your journeys are short it will be very low anyway. Have a trip out at the weekend and drive at around 60 on some nice roads and do about 40+ miles and see what it says then....report back with results. If you have cruise control use it as much as possible for the trip and set to 60mph. You should get at least 45 mpg

What fuel are you using? Try Shell Extra, that upped my mpg when I first got a derv. Also keeping the revs too low doesnt help mpg either as TDI's are most efficient when the turbo is in use so for example from 30-45 just use third gear...

I hope this helps.

I had just been filling up from Tescos, but i hear i shouldnt unless i really need to. I shall try shell extra, what about Texaco?

Shell Extra cleans the injectors/engine plus i think it has a higher cetene level which means the car should feel a little more responsive after 2-3 tanks.

Texaco i believe is the same as tesco so just use shell extra or bp ultimate.

Depends on your journey/speed/distance etc.

I can get 30mpg from a short blast to the pub form work, or 55mpg from a 100 mile run out :)

Unfortunatly recently most journeys have been of the town kind but at easy speeds in correct speeds. Just thought MPG might of been a bit higher even on town journeys.

tdi's dont do well at town journeys. they still manage to slightly beat petrols but the main difference appears on long runs or motorway work. I remember i think it was pbirkett on here had one and didnt like the mpg at all, and it was winter, we swapped in the end for a clio 172 and he was happier, his style of driving and the journey in his case didnt show the TDI as being the better engine.

Main issue IMO with town driving or wholly town driving is the time it takes for the engine to warm up. Add in a bit of traffic light GP and the MPG will be low.

On the brighter side, at least TDI's are very easy to drive in traffic. :)

I have recently had new back and front tyres and my MPG has dropped from about 51MPG to about 46-48 for the same kinds of journeys. Guess the better grip from the new tyres is doing that?!?!

Did you every get this sorted? Never gone below 40mpg with a heavy right foot/town driving and 170 chip.

Clean the maf and check the coolant sensor
