i fancy a cupra tdi but i need some gentle persuasion to make what im sure will be the right decision


wow me with pictures fuel economy figures and general tales of driving loveliness

i used to have a fabia vrs back in the day but sold it when i bought a house

so is the cupra the car for me or will i get bored of it too quickly ? i have been told i need to keep it for a while by the mrs she has had enough of me buying cars its about 6 now in the last year.

i take it with the ap 4 pots up front they stop much better than the vrs as tbh i found the braking in teh vrs while not bad it didnt inspire confidence when pushing on they just seemed to have no feel

economy whats it like with 160hp compared to the 130. the gf once managed 70mpg out of the vrs i never really got more than about 60 usually mid 50's


the boot how big is it compared to teh fabia considering they are the same platform are they the same size ? split fold rear seat i take it ?

im getting into wanting practical features these days im getting old

is it climate control or just a/c ?

cruise control is it standard ? or is it yet again new stalk and a quick go with vag com ?


what tyre size do they wear ?

any reliability problems with teh 160 that arnt there on the 130 engine ?

ride quality whats it like ? is it as front heavy and liek to understear as much as the vrs ?

anything else i should know ?

oh is it variable servicing or is it vag's stupid 10k and 12 months service schedule again ?

Buy one.... ohhh buy one.... then like me and the rest of the TDI cupra-holics you'll be itching for an excuse to get behind the wheel. "Need the rubish taking out my lovely, of course I will. I'll put in the boot of my cupra, blast it round the country b-roads for an hour then put drop the rubbish off in the bins when I get back on the driveway!"

To be honest, the bootspace, mpg etc are very good for the size of car and speed. I work in IT, and can easily fit a 16 new PCs in it with the back seats down and not blocking the rear window.
With the seats up, I can get 8 in there.

Test drive an ibiza, any ibiza to get a feel for the spaciousness and practicality (i know tdi cupras are rare at dealers and dont hang about much! lol)... then drive a tdi cupra when you get the chance and have your socks blown clean off at the diffrence in POWER! and smiley-ness grin factor!

hehe cool i have a 1.4 mk2 ibiza at the moment for my get to work and back car and have a brabus roadster coupe for the sunny days but im selling the brabus for something slightly more practical in the going to ikea vain lol

i know it wont be anywhere as nimble as my brab or my vx220 but sometimes you just need a boot you can get a flat pack wardrobe in

This is my car The Platinum Grey hides the dirt and diesel soot really well but its not my favourite colour, red is.

As I used to have a 130 Sport (basically a vRS) I feel qualified to give you some kind of comparison.

The brakes still lack a bit of feel at times but they stop so much better than the 288s, the only downside is that the pads are rather expensive.

Economy's something I've actually lost out on with my Cupra, on 100 mile commutes, the best average I've had is 42.3mpg. I don't know if anyone's done better?

The boot is about the same size and the rear seats are split with 3 proper belts.

The car comes with ESP and all the other safety abbreviations. Cruise was an option on the later models and its not easy to install as an upgrade. I was having this conversation with Ross in his garage the other day! It comes with climate and it may have an MP3 headunit and steering controls depending on the age of the vehicle. The tyres are 205/40/17W, came with P-Zeros as standard.

Reliability? Nothing 160 specific, just the usual PD issues. Just to note, mines not been touched from new.

Ride quality is a bit iffy, it has very hard shocks and soft springs so you feel every bump in the road, but it feels solid when you're pushing it. Its the same engine on the same platform so it handles in a similar way.

It uses the 10k/1 year plan but has to use the SLX3 Longlife oil! Its stupid and very expensive when it comes to servicing...thats how they get ya!

The only other thing to mention is that the choice of wheels for the Cupra is very poor due to the size of the front calipers. TT 17" alloys seem to fit though

Strangely I appear to have gone the same route as Tom, but without the many, many Ibizas in the middle.

On my normal trip to work now (30miles or so each way) according to the display I normally get 45mpg+ so it depends on the driving style I guess.

I have to agree with the comments on the brakes and the suspension, but they're bearable so don't really need to be changed.

id imagine the ride will be a bit softer than my brabus at the moment and certainly softer than my vx

are the seats comfy i take it they are just the ones out of the mk1 lcr


shame cruise is hard to fit on the ibiza as it was easy on most of the vrs's

Most of the above comments are true for my experiences so far. Even on the road trip on Sunday with the Clios I averaged 43mpg for the day, involving mostly A/B-roads at speed... (and with a Clio V6 following me).

I've been jotting a few of my thoughts down comparing my Ibiza to previously owned cars, and TBH it's more similar to my Clio than my old CTR: just as much fun to drive, but a lot cheaper to run.

Tyres are around £55 for Toyo T1-Rs in 205/40/17 size but I'm just deciding whether to go for 215/40/17s instead - about £6 more expensive. Just noticed my tracking is out (running waaay too much negative camber it looks like - tyres worn on inside edge).

If your going from a brabus smart to an cupra tdi the tdi will feel a hell of a lot faster. Ok the brabus will handle better as the chassis on the ibiza is old now and way off the pace off most of the newer hatches, eg corsa and punto

However the seat does win on running costs. especially if you get it serviced at your local skoda dealership instead of SEAT. Overall the best Tdi small hatch is the Ibiza FR with the older tdi 130 sport following up. They balance the best of both worlds. very low insurance, nice pace, amazing fuel economy and probably the most tuneable and also cheaper than the cupra's too.

Oh and remember the ibiza is the original super mini hot diesel. personal bug bear of mine when the Fabia ( which is my opinion is inferior) VRS gets mooted around as the original.

Also if you want to look at alternatives, check out the Punt Sporting Diesel. same 130 bhp as IBiza, amazng looks, cheap ( can wrangle a brand new one for £9995 on road) and have the amzing JTD lump in them that tunes very nicely with a remap. And also Fiat are producers of the best diesel engines in cheap car segment.

personally recommend the phase 2 Ibiza FR tdi over the cupra all the way. And if you have the VX220 ( even if it is the NA one) that will be enough to keep your racing driver frustratons at bay.
