Very bad starting on 110 TDi

Just called them - they sound convinced that the fuel pump timing is the problem!. Car is booked in for 25th July! Thanks Volkscraft!!!!:D

Huge thanks to Volkscraft for the advice, and to the guys at Fuel Electrics (Diesco), Ipswich. 01473 252594

The problem was with fuel pump timing - there was some misalignment that happened when the cambelt was changed. Apparently a common fault, and yet little known by many garages.

Now I'm going to write to my local Seat dealer in Bury St Edmunds and see if I can get any of the £160 back that they charged trying to diagnose the fault. They *really* should know this stuff, surely :shrug:

Car is now running like a dream again. I love my car once more!:)

...only problem is the air-con stopped working yesterday :cry:

glad you're sorted, however I noticed from the first post this has gone on for a year, is this since the belt was changed - some time after or was it changed before you aquired the car?

i will try and find a garage down in kent where i live that know what they are doing. thinking about it my has played up since cambelt change ,

On VE engines, the injection timing should be checked and reset at regular intervals (belt stretching etc), especially if you have recently changed your timing belt.

It has been bad since the belt was changed. Garage who did the belt change swore blind they did it all right, and I believed them. The boss is back off holiday on Monday, so I'll be paying a little visit....

nice to know it didn't jump a tooth, which seems rare, ( hope no-one can correct me on that) I think the engine cam and pump should all be locked before the old belt comes off and should be foolproof if you have the proper tools:doh:

You can use all the Genuine pins and still throw the pump timing out, its such a small adjustment that even the play in the pins can adjust it to either end of the spec, although most of the time they run ok.....its not necessarily correct

That's what the place who eventually fixed it said. I forgot to ask them exactly how they did it though. I guess they did something with the diagnostics.:shrug:

Well you can either do it with Vag com, the dealers 5051 etc, or the bosch people use their own version.

Its possible to use a DTI (Dial test indicator) but i prefer the computerised method.

My 03 Toledo 110 has just started doing this; it was serviced last week but it was in for a normal service & brake fluid change. Could twisting the belt to check the tension be enough cause the problem. I've just bought an OBD lead, is it the sort of thing I can sort myself with vagcom?

wouldn't have thought so try checking all the vac pipes for a start
