New to the forum and thinking of buying a 16v gti what are they like on petrol, how many miles do people get out of a tank on nice driving and hard driving.

PS if any one has one for sale contact me or if you want px/swap with a 99polo 16v

you don buy a valver for the MPG lol.. never gauged a full tank but around 100 mile on £20 for me :D ... i drove one of those here 125bhp Gti polo's and i think the ibiza 16v is alot quicker... id say the 16v polo was on par with my old 2L 8v ibiza.

i just read the bit about driving nice and hard... just hard for me lol :D

I managed trip avg on MFA of 46 mpg from Hemel Hempstead to Slough M1 - M25 - M4, so you can be frugal. Just filled up this morning and I put in 36L for 315 miles covered which equates to an average of 38/39 mpg.

Having said that i have seen my average trip reading at 6 mpg!

yeh depends on how hard you kick it ...ive got 6-8 before but the highest ive got is 36mpg ...and i was going like nearly 80mph on the m25, but in town i normally get around 20-25. so depends where u want to drive it.

the only bad thing about valvers is that they're are meant to be ragged lol, therefore bringing down the mpg

i can get about 220miles to a full tank (£45), i seem to do better on £20 which can get me about 150miles (cos i drive more cautiously)

Dont buy one for economy, i love my car but in all fairness its absolutely crap on fuel unless your grannying it down some nice straight roads. Most i have ever had out of mine is 44mpg and that was doing 100 miles down the M1 at 60mph. I average about 30mpg doing an 8 mile round trip to work 5 days a week in mine. Going out with the intent of having a huge amount of fun its sub 20's easily.

As already said you will have to push it to its limits to get the best performance from it, so if you a spirited driver you'll become a friend of the local fuel station.

Reliability wise they are very good with just a few small niggles letting them down. The first is the clutch cable as it wears out it gets heavier and this puts strain on the (second niggle) pedal box causing it to fracture and the whole lot to replace can cost in excess of £400 (i would know i've replaced both :( )

Buy one with a FULL service history as parts can be expensive, especially brakes. The other reason for this is that these cars have to be driven hard to get the best from them, meaning poorly maintained cars will suffer from more serious problems such as head gaskets and gearbox issues.

Body-wise look out for rusting on the rear wheel arches, the lower sills and the rear tail gate, check the foglight lenses also as these are prone to getting stone damage. On poorly maintained cars the laquer can also peel especially on the bright flat colours such as tornado red and kiwi yellow. Also check for wear on the drivers seat bolster

Lots of things mentioned to look out for there, but don't let that put you off. Use them to avoid buying a dog or as bartering points to lower the price of the car. High milage isnt a problem, so long as its been cared for. Mines done 115,000 miles now and goes just as well as it did on 50,000 miles. It all becomes worth it when i fly out of a left hander at full throttle in second gear and just go until i run out of road :D

I will second the pedal box issue, mine has broken 3 times and it has been welded up twice, now it is drilled and bolted together and is doing the trick! (hopes!). After the first time i changed the clutch which made it slightly lighter.

But today is the big thing, i had the clutch cable changed today and the clutch is so much lighter than it was when i dropped it off at the garage this morning. That plus the new clutch makes it so light!!

its like a totally different car now!! Im so happy with it :D ;) :funk:

Even tho its only a 1.4 8v!

Looking for a car with no more than 80k on the clock as I do tons of mileage, the mpg sounds ok realy my polo 16v (not the gti) munches fuel as the gearbox makes it rev so high at dual carrige way speed.
How much should I be looking to pay for a 80k car?

For a well cared for 80k car, you'll be looking between £1500 and £2000 i would think privately, but from a garage you could be hitting around the £2500 mark. If you have a limited budget try test driving a Cordoba SX same engines, but they cost less as they arent as popular as the Ibiza's

To be honest i wasn't at first, its grown on me now due to the higher spec levels and the tardis like boot.

The ibiza is just a bigger Polo, i used to have a MK4 Polo and it was a cracking little car, just didnt have much of a fun factor. Is your Polo a MK4 or 5? MK4 Polo 16v's are very popular and if yours is well cared for you should get the right amount of money to see you into a decent Cupra.

ive got an 8v gti - the fuel friendly GTI dude, easily get 90 miles out of a tenner and thats giving it some fun now and again.

I tend to drive pretty easily though - less is more and all that.
Never had any problems from having my 2 ibizas - love them

Good luck

and remember:
8v - fuel economy and torquey
16v - fun and expensive

see your point on the milage but these engines run well into the 200k mark as can be seen when looking for a cheap 16v golf!!!
