Hello!

Now before I continue I have been searching high and low reading though loads of old posts and finding out as much information as possible!

I have an Ibiza Sport 130 Tdi and its completely standard, I’m most likely going to take part in the Student Gumball Rally/Student Breakaway either next year on thereafter with my girlfriend as ill be at uni next year and need some time to get some money involved with sponsors etc..! It will be a laugh, ill post about that more nearer the time!

Now... I would like to upgrade the car a little to give it some more uumph! Now it looks like Miltek seem to be the most common picking for exhaust systems. I'm heading down the lines of the lines of the 'Cat-Back non-resonated with Twin jet tailpipes on the car, isn’t is illegal to have a cat back system, can someone explain to me briefly what that means, and would it be worth going for the hi flow sports cat and downpipe? I heard this can damage the car/engine. Just wandering what’s the best for a nice noise and a little boost in performance?

Next... after exhaust sorted I have been looking into re-mapping and I’m really confused because you can get your car chipped which I have seen to avoid and then there is REVO which look good and you have the option to turn it on and off as you please? Now can this damage the car in long term at all?

Where is the port in the car where you plug this stuff into and i saw a little demo somewhere and it looks so easy, why does it cost £450-500 odd quid to do it when its so simple? Cant it be just downloaded from a laptop onto someone else’s car, or just simply buy this SPS1 thing and its all fine?

Sorry about the long post but will someone please explain the best way of getting some more performance from my car without too much off a dent and what are the implications please!

Thanks

Stu!

Hi. Most people throw away the paper air filter out of the airbox, and replace it with one made by Green or K&N.

Next, replace the air intake with one from the Cupra version (much bigger and allows in more air).

A remap is generally the next step (before the exhaust). Changing the airflow will benefit the remap. There are other bits like FMIC and exhaust, but I think you'll find enough power/torque with the Stage 1 remap.

Then you are also into the territory of having to replace things like the clutch before you can go any further.

So probably performance panel air filter, bigger intake and Stage 1 remap should be sufficient (get air filter and intake secondhand for say £50, and a decent remap for around £250 - £300).

Can't help you with the rest because I haven't used things like VAG-COM.

Thanks for your reply Yella Beeza, that sounds like a good plan of action to me, although what about the exhaust I think you forgot to mention, if I go as far as the exhaust will I need to upgrade the clutch and some other bits first of all or not?

Plan of action

*New Panel Air Filter
*Cupra air intake (Can I get the garage to do this, without them looking at me funny when I ask them too? lol)
*Remap... Which one though, what’s the difference between Stage 1 and 2. Which one would someone recommend, I don’t want to have a botch job done and end up having problems later on down the line!
*Exhaust, I would love to have the sound, or would I need to upgrade other area before this?

I think I would draw a line there to be honest as I wouldn’t want to spend over £1000 on upgrading all these bits together.

Any more information from the above would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Stu!

you might wan to factor in the 312mm brakes as the standards won't be up to stopping a remapped ibiza. trust me, been there done that...

For exhaust just chop out the two boxes and weld in some stainless, do a search for mufflerectomy...

So:

Intake/filter - £60
Remap - £300 - £500
Brakes 312mm - £250 from golfturbo.com
Exhaust £100

Do a search for "mufflerectomy", a common mod where the exhaust system is simply replaced by a straight-through pipe, much much cheaper that buying a Milltek system.
You could even go the whole hog and get it de-catted too.

When people talk about "chipping", these days they are generally referring to remaps, uploaded via the diag port (pop out the small plastic drawer below and to the right of the steering wheel). I don't know anyone who has had a physical re-chip on a Mk4 (except me, but forget about that! :D ).
The cost you refer to is for the R&D involved in developing the maps.
However there are several tuners active on here with good reputations that will remap for half the cost of Revo / Custom Code.

Oh yes, the 312mm brakes are a must, worth every penny.

You can fit the Cupra intake yourself, don't need to get the dealer to do it.

And don't get the intake new from the dealer. Seat are trying to make money from this conversion. You'll be looking at around £60 + VAT. Secondhand is a better bet. They are always coming up for sale when people sell their cars.

Ok Thanks for everyone’s feedback, the first thing I’m picking up on here is the safety factor so i feel up rating the brakes is a must if I get any performance upgrade e.g. the remap!

I did a search for "mufflerectomy" and most feedback I saw in the posts I read is that it’s not that good, on a diesel anyway because you lose the spooling sound from the turbo and in short terms sounds like a tractor. I saw the Cat-Back non-resonated Twin Jet tailpipe Milltek Exhaust for just under £300 which I’m reasonably happy with. I do hope that’s fitted!

I think ill manage to cope with the Cupra intake and new air filter, regarding the brakes I don’t know anything about fitting these parts and how much would they cost to be fitted with the new parts? What type of garage would do an upgrade like that for me...? It might sound stupid but will they fit in my alloys (the standard ones)? Would I need to upgrade my rear brakes? When it comes to servicing etc... Are the brake pads etc replaceable with official SEAT parts if you understand what I mean; the garage would understand that the brakes need different parts when new pads are needed?

The Remap...Could someone give me a small list of links if you would to some recommended maps, so I can browse though and pick the most appropriate. When you see there are a few tuners on here that would do it for half the price, would it be safe that way? I may want the peace of mind at a backed company unless I'm assured it’s acceptable.

Thanks for anymore help its very much appreciated!

If you go to Home page, Sponsors and Supporters, there's some of the Companies who'll do remaps there. Feedback from members as well.

A search will reveal some info on brakes. Haven't done it myself, but the fronts will have a bigger effect than the rears.

If you have 16 inch wheels, that should be big enough to accomodate Cupra front brakes.

I've been doing various searches regarding the 312mm brake upgrade and found various information, looks like it's a needed modificaion!

Regarding a uprated clutch, how needed is this in reality, what would be a ball park figure if I was to think of taking it one stage furthur.

Sorry, I dont mind to be a pain; i'm just trying to find out as much information as possible before I start to take up changing things!

Thanks again!

Rear brakes - no need to touch these, they hardly do any work anyway so no benefit in upgrading.

Front brakes - come replacement time you'd have to tell the garage that you've changed the calipers, the 312mm setup was fitted to the Leon Cupra (amongst others) so you should be able to get Seat pads & disks. However, changing pads/disks is pretty easy, and for the same price as you'd pay to Seat, you could get some better aftermarket ones I would expect. Either that or get OE quality parts from somewhere like Euro Car Parts or GSF for less money. The 312mms fit under the std 16" Sport alloys (and your steel spare will fit over too, as I discovered one dark wet morning :) )

Remaps...have a look under the forums for Bell Auto Services and P-Torque on here, read through peoples reviews of them. I got mine done via Upsolute, similar price to the above.

Clutch - the standard one tends to be OK up to approx 300lbft torque, some will slip, some won't; depends both on torque peak figure and also how it's delivered. If you get slip you can either get your mapper to peg the torque back a bit to stop it happening, or you can get an uprated clutch. This would cost you but it would mean making the most of the car's mid-range potential.

Mufflerectomy, well it can sound a bit tractor like, but you definitely hear the turbo whistle more....I've heard T. Spark's and EdButlers (recently sold to Jenk) and personally I quite like the sound, but some don't.

Lee you chav. :p

On a serious note though, Tom B found that some of the 312mm calipers are different so they don't all fit under the 16" Sport wheels. I never tried with my old Ibiza as I had the 17" Oz's when I put them on and there was ample clearance. Also the Ibiza Cupra has APs rather than Bremobos, but these run with 312mm discs so should be quite easy to get hold of.

Remap wise, a lot of it depends on how you drive as well to as whether the clutch slips, i.e. just dump the clutch and it will break over time, but if you drive sensibly then you're fine.

@Seat_Stu:

The Cupra 160 intake is easy to fit, just go to your parts desk and ask for these part numbers...(from my invoice), 6LL129621 and 6LL129618.

Basically you have 3 parts to your intake...a bit that slots into your front grill area (which contains a nasty restriction - i hacksawed this out), a size adaptor kinda takes the oblong shape to a round and the flexipipe its self.

You will be replacing the flexipipe which leads to the airbox and the size adator. These cost me £29 from seat 3 yrs ago and have been on all my ibiza's since takes about 5 mins to change.

I also removed a restriction/trumpet thing from the airbox (mines a 130 FR so yours might not have it), dont know if it made alot of difference but hey upto you - i like to fiddle.

Hope this helps.

the price different for the mufflerectomy and the added simplicity of just having a straight pipe must surely outweigh any negative noise. I mean its a diesel, its never gonna sound like an alfa v6 - but it can damn well go like one!

Oh pants, i thought that included fitting, what type of figure would it be with fitting?

Regarding the clutch, are these any links I can follow for informaition/prices or anything?

The brakes, looks like ill have to get the ones off an Audi TT then to make sure they fit. If i get someone to fit this all in one go do you think I would get any sort of discount?

I would most likely be having damn stickers all over the car from the rally next year, sponcors might get discount or dont look very likely?

Thanks
