new tdi owner needs to pick yer brains

i picked up my 07 zenith grey 1.9 tdi sport today, vin number VSSZZZ6LZ7R****** ...nice wee car...

anyhow, paperwork all done; had a pep talk about seats and diesel; got in it and off i go....albeit a bit slowly i expect, as ive not had a diesel or car like this one...

10 mins in, stuck in traffic...i decide to click on the radio and then notice i dont have any steering wheel audio controls! what?

the brochure (06/07) shows i would have them; the sales person said i would...(i could only test drive the 1.9 altea...just to see what the engine was like)....

the website only shows 2008 specs

im a bit p'd off....

i phoned the dealer as soon i got home....they said i cant have a different s/wheel fitted as it has to be fitted in the factory!! wtf?

they said i could have my oil and filter change for free at 400 miles or so (woo-hoo, 45 quid)

apart from throwing an undignified fit on their forecourt at earliest opportunity, is there anything i should know or do to sort it out? i guess if its just the way it is, i'll have to negotiate some sort of after-sales deal as it was kinda mis-sold by brochure and salesperson (who quit on fri)

any wise words for this girlie?

Louise.

Hi. I have the Issue 12/06 brochure.

It says the cars fitted with steering wheel mounted audio controls are the Ref Sport, FR and Cupra. Not the Sport.

I think your car will be the 2007 model. If the brochure is date 06/07 I'd be surprised they have built the cars, shipped them to the UK and to the dealers that quick. But then I could be wrong!

Someone on here could probably tell the build date from the chassis number.

in my 06/07 brochure, it says that :

the reference, ref sport, sport, stylance, FR, cupra all have steering wheel mounted controls.

the reference, ref sport, sport and stylance have standard radio/ single cd, without mp3/ aux compatibility.

this asides, i was given a current brochure by seat dealer which states i will get them, backed up verbally by sales person when i asked for test drive on repeat visit....so i guess i havent got what i ordered....mmm..need a plan...

Have you contact seat themselves? if you get no joy from them then hand it back for a full refund if you're not happy. Zero loss and get another ordered you have 30 days to change your mind on any car purchase for a full refund.

I personally wouldnt take any **** from the stealer. Theyre your best mate until you sign and drive.

I'm sure if you point this out to the garage manager he'll be a bitmore responsive.

Suggests to me that either the sales brochure is wrong, or the dealer hasn't sold you a 2008 spec car. If the salesman said it would have them, then go back and complain. You don't want an oil/filter change (why at 400 miles??). Seems to me they know they're in the wrong if you've been offered this.

If the salesman just makes excuses, speak to the Sales Manager. I still think they will be getting rid of the last of the 2007 spec cars just now. We need someone to identify the month build. Or could the next letter R be the week build (ie 18) after the 7? Anyone??:)

the 6L shows its a mk4.
the 7 is year of build
the R is Martorell, the factory where it was built.
the last 6 numbers are the build no for the car.

the website 2008 spec is different to my brochure....the 2008 spec for the 1.9tdi says it will come with mp3/ aux as standard. the brochure 06/07 says thats only for FR and Cupra.

searching for specs via google shows me some have the steering controls, but i did find one that hadnt. broadspeed.com shows the 1.9tdi as having the audio steering controls as spec.

perplexed  :headhurt:

Think the 06/07 brochure will still be for 2007 model cars. The 2008 spec on Seat's website says all models have steering wheel mounted controls (ie Reference, Reference Sport, Stylance, Sport, FR and Cupra).

Either way, it looks as though you have got a pre-06/07 car if it hasn't got them fitted. This seems to tie up with my 12/06 brochure. So the salesman is, well, just wrong! That's putting it politely.

Lol that comment about until you sign and drive the stealers are your best mate! I fully agree with this!

I picked my car up, noticed that a proper valet hadn't been done & the steering wheel controls for the radio weren't working! I took it back the following day and everything was rectified!

I'm a little annoid with the aux in facility as it was introduced as standard fit not long after I picked my car up. Just spent £120 getting an iPod connecter fitted tho, quite laughable...oh yes and 0% finance available!!!

I had to pay extra for my steering wheel controls.

Mine is an 06-plate.

I had a few issues with my dealer in the past, and when they were a bit uncooperative I went down and parked my car in front of their service bay entrance completely blocking it, I then went and sat in the customer waiting area and had a coffee, all of a sudden the general manager turned up and wanted to know all about the problems with my car! (helps if you use this tactic on a busy monday morning! :D) Must have been something to do with the fact that his mechanics couldnt get in or out of the workshop! He listened to my problems and then very politely asked me to move my car, the problems with it were then sorted within an hour!

Mayb u should try these tactics??

wave that info under the dealers nose, its in black & white as you say.

a little mention of the trades description act and i reckon your in for a little more that an oil & filter change!

nice choice of car btw!;)

If Looby has been sold an older spec car on an 07 plate I would complain! I will have been sitting in Spain for a while if it was only delivered recently.

There's got to be other updates in the spec as well, not just the steering wheel controls. If I was told I was buying a 2008 spec motor and didn't get it, I would hand it back until I got what I thought I was buying!

When I ordered mine mid-November last year, Steering controls were only available with the Luxury Pack on the Sport model - which seems to be what you've got there - not a current model.

Update

well...

called seat customer care...explained. they said dealer fault..they advise trading standards.

called t/standards...cos car on part finance, VFS liable...advised to call VFS.

explained it to them; they put me on hold...came back n told me they would call dealer.

i drove to dealer.
finance company suspended the completion of my paperwork....of course, they didnt want to be liable for a potential pit-fall.

dealer/ sales manager knew his salesperson shouldve told me that:

the spec for the tdi was changed at end of May, so that s/wheel audio controls were standard.

BUT that they wouldnt be rolling these out in the UK until about October. I couldve pre-ordered one from factory, but wouldve waited til later in the year to get it.
i explained, as trading standards told me to, that however it happened was not my problem, but theirs. Seat UK agreed.

left the ball in their court for a couple of hours after saying i'd negotiate with service costs or accessories etc....

i couldnt tell them i'd take them to court, cos at this point, it still belonged to them and not VFS.

2 hrs later, i got a couple of years free servicing, set of mats, full tank of diesel.

not too bad an outcome, all things considered...i wanted the car, i didnt want to nullify the contract and give them this one bcak to take my MG back.

i shall be a bit more aware next time of potential pitfalls....meanwhile, i'll wait for my service vouchers to arrive, the finance paperwork is sorted....

phew.....what a day....
