When leaving some lorry tyres in yesterday for repair the tyre man quoted me £65 a pop for some 'special' bridgestones, didn't get a look at them though..

I have Dunlop 9000 SP's on my FR. I had to change one of them on Saturday, after clipping a curb (trying to avoid old biddy driving down middle of road!). Fortunately, the huge rim protectors on them meant that the alloy was unscathed. Better to fork out £115 on a new tyre, than a new rim, as well as the tyre!

When you say "rim protector" are you meaning part of the rubber tyre that protrudes slightly?

Yeah. It works, didn't realise they had them on there, but after clipping the curb the other day, and putting a carbuncle on my tyre, I know they damn well work! I just have a rubber scuff mark on the rim.

HMmm do any other tyres in the 18" flavour come with rim protectors? I meant to check the Bridgestones(?) on the FR TDI, but I forgot.

Came a bit late to this thread after a search ...

I was shocked to find this week that my Leon FR TDi fronts have worn out ( down to the wear indicator ) after 18000 miles - this seems horrendous after my VRs Octy last year - I thought - is it me ? my driving style ? soft tyres ? problem with car ..?? Its mostly motorway and A road driving

I now see that it is a feature of the Leon FR to wear quickly , so at least its not me ! :) And the wear pattern - in the middle , not at the edges ?! Strange ! I have checked the tyre pressures regularly , and they seem to be OK by the book ..

Any recomendations for a harder wearing tyre ?

anybody tried Toyo Proxes T1R on FR tdi yet. I had them on my last car and they were brilliant. The Bridgestones on my FR TDI are not as good as the Toyos. I have the 17" as I go for performance and grip/ handling I personally thought the 18s compromised handling but perhaps it was sidewall rigidity (too much) I have noticed my 17" bridgestones are a bit round shouldered after under 2K miles. I tend to be a fast smooth driver knacker the tyres after a short mileage but brakes last well and fuel consumption over40mpg
