TomTom Permanent Power

Hi All,

Im wanting to wire the ciggy lighter adaptor from my TomTom permanently into my New Leon. I was just going to tap into the power for one of the ciggy lighters in the car but they are permanently live and because the Tomtoms adaptor is a transformer it will draw current all the time - not a good situation i would have said.

So my question is this: where can i find an easily accessible switched live in the new Leon?

Anyone done this or something similar?

Regards,
David

HU power? There's a +ve, GND and a REM cable... the REM supplies a small amount (to keep Clock and Radio tuner settings etc) and the +ve is used when you press the power button.

An Amp works the same way (in principle) with +ve, GND and REM.

Major gripe for me for the tom tom's this is. They are great bits of kit but the way they are powered is a bit of a joke. I have the home charger and even with an over night charge the dam thing still drains in an hour and a hlf to 2 hours. There should be a car fitting kit or something a bit more discreet that a whopping 5 inch plastic cigarette lighter adapter. Its because of this i hardly ever use mine. Im clueless at electrics and wouldnt have a clue what to do to hard wire it so id probably have to pay a company to do it for me.

If the new Leon is like the Altea then I found a switched positive in the fuse box on the drivers side of the dash. Just wire in a fused connector to your Tomtom and the wire can be neatly tucked down the side of the dash making the installation quite discrete.

I've just had my TomTom lead permanently wired in by the guy who fitted the car phone kit, he offered to do it whilst the dash was apart (which was nice). He had to take a switched live feed from the radio harness for the phone so that is also shared by the tomtom. The wire comes out just above the top vents, looks fairly discreet. Now all I need is a non-sucker mount for the tomtom, I'll probably get a vent mount if I can find one.

picture of the TomTom lead coming out of the dash, (it's soft there so no need to cut anything) quite neat as it just tucks out of the way in the vent, and doesn't get in the way like it did from the cigarette lighter !
The other screen on the dash is the parrot bluetooth car phone kit, I couldn't get a car with Bluetooth option without waiting three months for it, but I'm very happy with the parrot kit anyway, works really well and syncs really quickly. Sound quality is great as it uses the stereo. The unit is pretty slim (about 1cm) and is in the same style/colours as the dash anyway so I think it fits in nicely :)

Not too sure about that but I would have thought it gave out 12v & not 5v that I think the TomTom needs. Now maybe the phone installer somehow managed to connect the TomTom power lead behind the dash so it does now give out 5v?
I've just heard back from a dealer that it's not possible to have bluetooth and the custom Seat TomTom base working together. Maybe it'll just affect the audio routing & not the auto powering up when connected? Has anyone got both fitted?

factory orders only? (not retro-fit)

ps cuprar, how you finding it? the car that is!

I was told, I could buy a cradle, but like you say, it requires a factory fit prep harness.

Can't see why these couldn't be sold too.

Anyhow, my idea was to get a cradle a retro fit my own wiring.

The car is stunning mate, loving it. About 850 miles on it now, gonna wait till 1000, then start opening it up a little more at a time. It's so smooth, giving around 30 mpg's so far. You'll have to let me know by how much the headroom is decreased with your sunroof!!! just to make me feel better about not having one lol.

No, I had ordered both as factory fit options, but it could only be bluetooth or pre-installation wiring, so I opted for the bluetooth.
