A Few Newbie Questions.

Hi all, i'm new to the TDI era (always had a petrol car), anyway, just have a few questions on my 01 Seat Leon TDI90 (lack of power i know), i was wondering:

Whats the best air filter to go for? (thinking K&N, but honsesly don't know what to go for),

What exhaust system is recommended by you guys? (was thinking milltek),

Where's the best place to get it chipped, bearing in mind i live in Bangor, N.Wales(by the isle of anglesey, at the top).

As you've gathered, i've not got a clue and these are quite cheap (ish) mods to increase the power and response of the car, i'm also looking at a FMIC in time (anyone selling one cheapish, or know of any going?) and in time, a good while down the line, due to cost, an uprated/replacement turbo.

Any help/advice greatfully accepted,

From what I've gathered changing your filter and/or exhaust will gain next to nothing in terms of power, just change the noise a bit.

As for remap, it depends if you can afford a custom or just the standard.

Reading and searching will return answers to these questions.

Hi Wayne, youve come to the right place for TDI info, theres loads on here in the TDI section, including the older generation 90 and 110 engines. Have a browse back through.

Best air filter - get a Green Cotton one, from Badger5 for a members discount (he has his own subforum on here or username ibizacupra)

Exhaust - Milteks are good, complete systems with no cat will see a very small increase in power but better spool up times for the turbo.

remap - not sure about that, but to be honest a mobile service might be best for you, and tell you what Upsolute has had nothing but excellant reviews and have a very good history with the older generation non PD TDIs, do a search on here for upsolute for more info.

After that your looking at changing the injectors, turbo and fitting and FMIC would be the logical route.

The other exhaust option involves just removing the silencers completely, not as bad as it sounds ! Been discussed aplenty - search on here for "mufflerectomy". A lot cheaper than a Milltek system.

I think if you got to the stage of changing injectors, turbo and fitting a FMIC, it would be more worthwhile spending the money on a PD with more grunt to begin with....

With chipping, I'm not sure you have so many options with it being an older non-PD engine. But I'd echo Stews advice, try Upsolute :)

Thanks for the advice lads, taken into consideration, :) i've had a price off super chips of £500 for a re-map, that should take me upto 117BHP, but with an exhaust and filter, i'dbe hoping for a bit more, is this right, or would ibe better off getting a custom re-map, as i don't know how much they got for.

if it was mine I would stick with the original air filter, do a muflerectomy but keep the cat, approx £110-20 in stainless, check your EGR and manifold are clean and isolate the EGR vac, then fit 110 nozzels .216 from memory and pause for breath, then a chip or reprogramme definitly not £500 worth, but you may need some cash for a clutch or better brakes along the way, best of luck

Don't bother with Superchips, go with someone like Upsolute, better reputation and will be significantly cheaper too.

when i serviced it the other week they seemed clean, why would i isolate the vac?? and how?

been going through all those pointers in the like cheshire car, WOW major time gone into that, lol,
I was only thinking of taking the car upto about 130, whats the best way people in the know, lol, since reading the abouve link, i might stick with the STD intercooler and put a cryo kit on it, to cool it further.

small tube connected to the egr, just put a screw driver bit in the end, much better and less smoke !

i also cut the flap out of my air intake today, noticed a bit of a difference in terms of spooling up, got my green panel filter to slot in now then ill be sorted !

dont forget to stick some redex cleaner in now and then especially if you use crappy supermarket fuel !

You can get the tuner do close the egr without using a screw. Do the mods like clutch and exhaust.....get milltek. Then go for a custom map for much better results!
