Hi guys, has anyone yet fitted a roof rack? Went to buy the seat one and they have stopped selling it, apparently it has been damaging the roof! Was going to go for an aftermarket one but don't really want to damage the car.

www.skidrive.co.uk is well worth a look. They've got a Thule Aerobar kit for £105 (del inc).
I've got some of these on my Ibiza Cupra Tdi at the 'mo and have had no probs with roof damage. Regularly have two mountain bikes up top.

Should be picking up my Leon FR Tdi soon, so will be purchasing another compatible set. Unfortunately they're not interchangable, longer bars, different fitting kit reqd etc....

I also need a roof rack/bars. For carrying kayaks, windsurfing boards or bikes. I really like Thule ones but obviously don't want to damage the car.

Last thing you want is a £20 one from Halfords though :)

I'm interested in this as well.

Also anyone got any recommendations for a decent bike rack for 2 or 3 mtb's ?

well give a roof rack a miss as:

a) You're car will go through more fuel
b) Lifting the bike up onto the roof after a days riding is a pain
c) Mud and stones will fall from the bike and scratch the roof

When my Leon arrives I'll be getting a Thule rack for it. Splash the cash but I know they are the best made ones out there ATM

Thanks for the replies. Not going to keep the rack on the car all the time, just when i need to transport two bikes. Had a rear mounted thule rack on golf but they dont seem to make one for the leon, think its the hatch design. Is the factory rack not made by thule?? if not will go for one of those.

hi,
my personal choice (on my current car) is one of these, combined with one of these. yes, it works out a little bit more expensive, but its well worth it. no lifting your bikes high, therefore less risk to you and your car, plus the flexibility to tow things if required.

anybody got any info on how it damages the roof, I have had a Seat rack on mine since I picked it up end of August last year, used it to carry a real heavy 1960's malibu surfboard and not noticed any damage to the roof.

the series 1 roof is better designed for roof-racks imo, got the tracks to slot them into rather than having them clip round the outside of the car, but the Seat one still looks OK when on either a black or silver one

Hi matey, do you need to remove the aerial to have a roof box fitted?

I've just bought Atera aero bars and cycle carriers from the Roof Box Company....£250 for the bars and 3 cycle carriers including locks. They seem well made (equal to Thule bars/carriers I've had in the past) The bars come ready assembled and are specific to the car so you can't buy adapter kits if you change the car. The cycle carriers are well designed and a step up from the (ageing) Thule carriers they replaced. I don't leave them fitted to the car for extended periods of time but looking at them fitted I can't see any reason why they should damage the car

I have used a Pendle rack and found it very secure . You need a towbar though but if you get a detachable one its hardly noticeable. .

I have just ordered the Thule aero bar from skidrive.co.uk, hasn't been delivered yet, but I'll let you know how I get on.

I was toying with the idea of a towbar mounted carrier (for mountain bikes) but the tow bar seemed to work out too expensive, and the Thule one on Halfrauds website apparently can't be fitted to removeable towbars?

Can anyone confirm this?

Also, all the companies I contacted said that a tow bar on an FR required a cut in the bumper.

Anyone had one fitted without a bumper cut and used a bike carrier? If so, how much did you pay?

Thanks

I have got the Thule standard roof bars on my leon fr. Works a treat and i have had no problems so far.

Used to have a saris bones bike rack but it forces the whole bumper down and it wasnt very secure.
