Have a new question for all you TDI owners!

When I get after driving, say to town, sometimes when I park up I can smell a sorta burning smell coming through the air vents. This doesn't always happen, but seems to happen more if i've been driving a short distance. Anyone have this, and is it completely normal? I'm sure it's nothing but as this is my first turbo diesel not used to the TD smells!

Hi All

I have had my FR just over a week now, got it as a company car, the diesel was cheaper on tax. I had it upto 130 before snicking into 6th the day I got it.
As everyone else has said 1st is geared all wrong. This would kill most peoples ability to get of the lights really quick for a good 0-60. I also find that there is absolutly no grunt AT ALL below 2000rpm. Its completely dead. My 105 bhp touran could initially get away quiker. Once moving its great though and handling is very good compared with other cars Ive had (Impreza being one)

I also had a smell of burning the day I got it through vents which is probably some of the laquer/oil/polish etc on and around engine and exhaust being drawn in on a new car.

Great car though....love it so far.

I rarely do short distances, but even when I do I never get the burning smell. I've had it once, about 2 or 3 days after I got my grubby little paws on it. It didn't smell like a hot clutch, so I just assumed it was some kind of stuff from the factory burning off - the dealer said it might "smell hot" for the first few hundred miles.

I've covered just over 2000 miles now and not smelt it since. I have smelt hot clutch, but that's other peoples' cars I think

Not had any clutch slippage, or been doing it myself on hills, handbrake = win.

I have never ever seen the DPF light come on on the dashboard either, other than when you first put the key in the igintion into the on position (or whatever SEAT call it).

So yeah, only had that hot/burning smell the once, not smelt anything at all from it since.

Thanks for your info guys..

chippenhamwilts, I think the low power below 2000rpm is generally a turbo diesel thing, it's before the turbo kicks in I think.

My car has gone in for it's seat sensor to be fixed now, so I have another car from the dealer, and by the power of it, feels like a 1.2 petrol Ibiza. If you want any proof how quick the Seat Leon 2.0 TDI FR is, drive one of those! Was driving it up hill and it was struggling in 3rd. Picking my car back up tomorrow, so hopefully this sensor problem will be sorted.

I've had mine for 3 days now and overall am very pleased with it. It's very satisfying once you get it on a clear stretch of road [B)]

One strange thing tonight though; the low fuel light came on but there's still nearly a 1/4 tank left (or whatever the lowest marker is). Does this sound normal? I thought it might be down to the computer working out how much is left. The car has just done 400 miles.

I haven't let my fuel drop below a quarter of a tank as yet, so haven't seen the fuel light come on. If you were on a hill or something that could cause it I guess. Try filling it up a bit and see if the light goes off. Not a bad thing mind that it gives you plenty of warning to fill up.

well i did floor it around a corner just before it came on......

It's no bad thing but the flashing icon on the MFD and the ocassional bong can get distracting.

Pay heed to the 1/4 tank left - it goes down disproportionately quick in the last sector. This evening when I left work it was just under 1/4 full and was registering empty after just 25miles!!! Could catch some out!

Car update:Was hoping to be driving home with my seat leon but, the seat sensor problem has risen to a complete seat fault where the dealer tells me, they have compared the seats of two cars and my passenger seat is missing a wire. So, I am alas stuck another day driving a 1.2 seat ibiza. The dealer themselves seem good so far, looks like a design fault. Whether this eventually leads them to order a brand new seat i don't know yet.

Yeah it has, the dealer thought it was originally just the fabric being a bit to tight when I originally phoned it in. But after that they told me it could be the sensor pad, so I brought it in yesterday. After looking at it they tell me it looks like a manufacturing problem in that there is something in the seat that should be there, but isn't. It's missing some sort of wire or connection. They say they want to keep it in for another day to see if they can figure it out.

so the dealer is saying that the quality assurance people let it leave the factory with a quality problem that is actualy highlighted on the mfd with the ignition on!!!
surely this should also have been noticed on the pdi.
i cannot believe this. what does it say about items that arent easy to see, or hidden in door panels etc.
my car was built last friday, i hope it isnt the preverbial 'friday afternooner'!

I must agree, it is a little worrying that the QA people let problems like this pass through. I will know more with my problem once I contact the dealer tomorrow to see how they have got on. Like you say though, this problem is only being looked into because I know about it, does make you wonder what other problems could arise.

I am hoping that because the engine is a VW engine that it has gone through a different QA procedure!

Seat fix update...

Picked the car back up on Wednesday. The dealer had actually washed the car inside and out as well, so credit to them, the car was sparkling! I have checked the faulty seat, and it looks like all is well. The fault was some missing cable or wire in the actual seat. The dealer told me it is the first car they have seen with this particular fault although they have said they have had two other Leon's with seat sensor problems, but it's usually the fabric being tight on the seat.

Anyway, all is well for now

Hi, Sorry to go off topic but it seems I have a few FR TDI owners attention :D

Can I ask what kind of MPG you are getting on average? Im contemplating buying one but a bit concerned what figures to expect. Also anyone had DPF issues at all?

Thanks

Chris

Hi Haddock, that is a good thread think it covers it.

I have also posted my findings on MPG at the beginning of this thread. The figures I have placed are however from the trip computer, so it all depends on how good the trip computer is.

I had this at the beginning and I thaught it was a normal thing. ... until my girlfriend observed very cool air coming on the right side from underneath the bord. When I took it to the service they admitted that there was a sort of sensor (for A/C i think) that got overheated, melted the air pipes, and then suddenly droped outside the board. All this hapened on winter time ... You should check it.
