How much does a new MAF cost?

Where's the best place to order them from?

Is it reasonably easy to replace yourself? (For someone with no real experience at doing things with cars).

I'm beginning to suspect the same thing as Sooty Torques. My car just seems to lack the smoothness and "oomph" that it should have. There seem to be flat spots and hesitation at various points in the power curve, as if it's holding back.

Mine was a SEAT exchange unit - £64+VAT from the dealers.

SEAT dealers...? I'm sure there must be pattern ones around seeing as VW/AUDI/SEAT/SKODA recognise the MAF as being a known weakness with the PD engines, esp. the 130. Would they be any cheaper ordered through a VW or Skoda dealers?

Have a look in the TDI FAQ - there are a few threads on MAFs. It is easy to locate so I'd imagine easy to fit...? Dealer charged me about £18 to fit it. I'm sure there are threads or parts of threads where identifying and fitting the MAF is covered.

There was some talk (and stuff in the TDI FAQ) about swapping the VW one for a Pierburg (sp?) MAF as fitted to some Mercs? (I think). Not sure how that worked out long term.

Editing your spelling
its a doddle to replace yourself, but you need some security torx bits to undo it, or if you get the whole thing in the pipe then it can be replaced even easier. If you get just the MAF unit itself its just a case of unplugging it, undoing the two security torx bits slide the old one out, new one in and reverse the procedure.

Has anyone tried to clean the MAF sensor before replacing it to see if it makes a difference? The way the sensor works can be affected by the bulid up of crap on the sensing parts of the MAF.
I've done it in the pst to cars i've worked on and its cured running problems. Unfortunately its never been on a Seat.

Most have gone on to not fault again. Others have had to be replaced because they were that badly scummed up. This was mainly on toyota's and fiat/alfa romeo's.
But, as you say, its a good way to pin point any failings of the sensor.

Just my two pennorth, but I have always found that regular (every three months) cleaning (a quick spray down its orifice and over the sensitive part with brake cleaning fluid) keeps a MAF in good condition for much longer. Also your choice of air filters does make a big difference to how long a MAF lasts (just research how a MAF works and then think of all the particles from some types of air filter and you will see what I mean) But don,t try to clean the MAF with even a small soft brush or as I did (a long time ago) you will quickly find out how delicate they are.

Yup, they certainly are delicate things!
Dont mean to hijack thread but whats the sensor located in the intercooler pipe behind drivers side of front bumper? Do these give problems like MAF sensors?

On my T plate Tolly that sensor (little black plastic prong, sticking into the airflow), is an air temp sensor, and benefits from being kept clean of oil mist, ie. a quick spray with brake cleaner every so often.
