Tacho in the A-Pillar

Ok being unconventional hear and leaving the standard clock in. BUT I want a tachometer and my chosen place is on the a-pillar mounted in a pod along with my voltmeter. Question is:

"Where do I take my tacho readin from? Where's best to wire it up to?"

Can anyone help?

your ignition coil. Its the silver metal cube (apx 7x7x5cm) with a plug, screwed to your scuttle panel. Can't remember which one of the three plug pins it need to be connected to tho :(

pretty sure its the green wire mate... there should be 3 wires... VW told me the wrong wire at first when i enquired... didnt screw the tacho up tho so all was alright... but yea it goes where mig is pointing (to the input wires)

I think its one of the side ones as the middle one is earth. What make gauge you thinking of getting? as I cant imagine you mounting a 5" tach to the A pillar. Egay are actually pretty good when it comes to buying gauges.

Im never going to have gauge pods on the piller. Pillers are too big already. Do you not find it gets in the way on a right hand bend? You dont see them on real rally cars do you?

Agreed!

I like adaptions of the DIN aperture to house guages, guage holders in the centre console or mounted within the steering wheel area!

Why? why on earth (excuse the pun) do you need to know what the voltage is?

If I am running x2 amps, x2 subs, front set of components, and having a small battery at the minute to supply the power. I do wonder

It's just so I know when I can crank up the power and when I need to be careful on it.

It's until I can sort out my power problems with a big alternator and/or a bigger battery.

I am glad the pillars are as thick as they are, they kinda saved me in my last accident in an ibiza.

True they don't have them on the a-pillars in rally cars but mine is not a rally car  and I wouldn't want to be looking at my centre console for my revs when I should be looking at the road so having it in my eye line is a good idea :)

I didnt expect your 'Rally Slag' to be full of Stereo... i miss mine so much now its summer, fair enough - that setup would load your electrics somewhat!!!

stereo i pressume mig - tunes "banging" so to speak eh..

Oh OK, was just a bit confused because he said "now that its summer", because personally I'd miss my tunes all year around. I remember thinking "my sub is so damn big and takes up so much room, might just use my 6x9s". So I sold the Sub, but i just couldn't get over the fact how rubbish my audio sounded without it, so 2 days late I went and bought another one . Damn I missed that nice deep base (and no, I'm not a chav who drives round town with windows down letting the whole high street know what music I like :help: ).

Anyways, back to topic. Sirculation if you are going to get it pillar mounted, have a look at the Nomad A pillars. not cheap but the closest your going to get to the OEM look.

Gauges arrived today so I have fitted them in just haven't wired them up yet.

Yes I know the protective film is still on ;)
And it probably needs an extra screw to pin it to the a-pillar better as you only get one :(

This is a godd thread actually, ive been thinking of getting a tacho or a while n wiring it up was going to be a problem, but now i have a rough idea. Does anyone know which wire it is definetly linked to??

Im guessing the guages will illuminate when wired up and the car is on?!

Im just going with the tacho on the a-pillar.... unless i find sumwhere else to put it?!

TBH it doesn't obstruct the view that much, must be because of how short I am and how close I sit on the dashboard anyway :)

Yes they will light up when they are wired up but the wiring I currently have seems a little short. Shall do a how to guide when I get some wire and my mates fits it for me because I will only end up doing it wrong and breaking something.
