Needs doing about every 2-3 years, but if you think it's not as cold as it should be then it definitely needs doing. Should be about £80 if you go to a specialist rather than a dealer.
Kwik Fit do it now aparently.

I paid 45 quid for a re-gas and the bloke came out to me. (St Ives Air Conditioning if you live in the cambs area, very good).

If you do have a bloke come to you, ask around at work and see if anyone else needs their's doing at the same time, you should be able to get a discount, given that he'll get a larger number of customers without having to drive anywhere.

Air-con regassing

This happened to me about 1 month ago - air-con not getting cold - so I took it back to the dealer (under warranty - Sept 04). They re-gassing - not under warranty  - and charged me £148  (including dye for test). I took it back a week later for a leak check and they admitted to faulty parts on system, fixed it and refunded the money - result!

ive had a local mobile man quote me 45 quid but since my cars in jp boards next week for service im gonna have them do it (£60 + vat). just as a point of note there is no way (that i know of) to measure the level of gas remaining until you empty the system and weigh the gas that you have alreadytaken out! :)

weigh an empty pop bottle, then put a few psi of pressure in it and weigh it again. It weighs more! We did it in science when I was a kid.

Also all the different gases weigh different amounts, compare helium to oxygen etc.

quite, each particle of the element will have a certain weight...different pressures means different number of particles per set volume of space and different weights!

For this you would need very accurate scales
And they do this as part of a £40 re gas???

they dont weigh the gas coming out but they empty the system and then put a set weight of gas back in.

The machine they use first takes the old gas out & weighs it, and then puts new gas back in.

The machine is basically a one button affair. Connect two hoses, set the required amount of gas and press the button.
