I was parked up at the local indian take-away waiting for the misses to come out and had the engine off and the key turned on. I noticed after a while the mirrors moved on their own. I took the key out put it back in turned it and after a while the mirrors moved again. What is the purpose of this?

LOL! i very much doubt it :p

Try it... park up turn off engine, turn the key to the last point before ignition sit there and just listen and watch the passenger mirror (more noticable than drivers mirror) you can hear the motors going and the mirror moves slightly (not the plastic surround the mirror peice only like your adjusting them with the switch)
