haha, the only real drawback of diesel is the initial cost to buy, low mileage examples are usually a bit more expensive and rarer than petrol because they are commonly used as company commuter vehicles and tend to rack up alot of miles.

a couple of my work mates drive puntos..they reckon they are faster than my lcr because they are blue! :)

i think all puntos are blue....i believe it was part of mr browns last budget.....something to do with the price of paint?

If you can be bothered I would sell the Cupra privately. I would have thought it would be worth at least £5k in a private sale. As you've already got £10k in cash that gives you £15k+ (and no p/ex) to tempt the dealer with. Do some research....Autotrader etc/internet...to find the best value LCR and Beeza deal for £15k anywhere in the UK. If the right cars are available locally but you can find similar ones cheaper elsewhere use that as a bargaining point when you sre haggling....just tell the local dealer you are prepared to travel to buy.

The point about dealer's sales targets and the timing of your purchase is worth bearing in mind....when I bought my Cupra TDI they were brand new in the country (mine was registered 11/03) but they offered £1k discount if I bought the car (paid cash, no p/ex as I sold a Yaris T-Sport privately) that month as they had a valuable sales target they were trying to achieve by the end of that month. I hadn't expected to get that sort of discount on a car that had only just been announced and wasn't even in the showroom....point is the dealer's sales targets was the key here.

When I bought the Evo the situation was different as the VIII MR's were on the run-out and the IX was due in the not too distant future. I reckoned a discount was achievable and did some research in mags, on the 'net and a few phone calls to find the best price available if I was prepared to travel. I then added a little more discount and armed with proof of the other deal available elsewhere went to the local dealer and gave them the price I was prepared to pay (cash, no p/ex) and said if they agreed I would sign there and then and pay a deposit. In all honesty I expected to be chipped back a bit on the deal but they agreed without any negotiation....result :D I suppose they thought I would go elsewhere if they didn't agree that price. I reckon I saved around £4k as against p/ex'ing another car. I would have been trading an Evo VI against the MR and reckon I would have got about £12k p/ex for the VI but would have had to pay full price (£30.5k) for the MR. As it was I got the MR for £28k and sold the VI privately for £13.5k....so saved around £4k. I also got 3 years free servicing (worth about £2k) but would have got that whichever route I had taken as it was an offer Mitsubishi were doing at the time. I always aim to sell privately and buy the next car for cash....depends if you are prepared to put up with the possible hassles of selling privately and be willing to wait until you get a decent price for your car. Personally I think the potential savings are worth it....I prefer the dealer to have as little of my money as possible :D

You have alot of good advise there from some serious barginers.
There are only few points that I can add...

Some garages have three monthly sales targets instead of monthly

If you are offered a very good deal and there are the same cars somewhere else don't be scared to tell the guy that you will go and think about it. And do walk out.... go to another dealer and put your cards on the table and say if you can beat this deal you will get a sale today. He will bite your hand off.

Cash is the only way, if you can afford to wait till August and afford to be with one car for a bit get the cupra sold then walking into a garage with £15 grand will be a good feeling, you instantly have the upper hand and if you would have been lacking in confidence you will instanly have more. This will also be a way of truely knowing what deal you are getting also. One thing that I have pulled is agree to take something but backing out on it at the last minute, this is underhand but if it helps you get a deal then alls far!!
I was buying a pug 106 GTI, I had a price in my head of what I would pay and was bargining hard to get it, I had said to the sales man that I would take the diamondbrite coating at £250. He knew that he was making a good cut on this so he did the usual bit of consulting the manager, several times. I got the price to what I wanted then told him I didn't want the diamondbrite, he almost spewed, he went white also BUT I got the car!!!

Make sure you go in with a maximum price in your head, don't be scared to show that you really want the car, this will be obvious anyway.

I would pick a garage that has both the cars you want, buy the Beeza first and at that time mention that you might be interested in the LCR too, this will whett the salesmans appetite and he will start working on you, this again gives you the upper hand.

AND don't mention the diesel beeza to the wife, the cheeper you can get it the more you have to spend on your toy. If you get the beeza first the wife might be a bit more keen to open the purse strings a bit more as she will be well chuffed with her new car

I wish I could be with you to buy these cars, I love doing this sort of thing!!

All the best on this and do let us know how you get on

Yeah all good points, but obviously each dealer has their own targets, either monthly or quarterly but also some garages work on selling as many cars as possible in order to gain manufacturers bonus's.

I am not sure whether this is so applicable for Seat but BMW for sure have this. They quite often sell at a loss but have to shift x number of cars to get the top bonus's. They even get bonus's for having fresh biscuits on the customer waiting room table!!

One thing I would say with the LCR's - The dealers at the moment really are not giving any discounts. I tried 3 in the south about 6 or 7 weeks ago and I got a max of £200 knocked off and that was just because I was willing to walk out the door if I did not get any sort of discount. I am told this is happening at the mo because now there has been a big demand on mk 1 LCR's with Mk2 being more expensive and not as desirable (as Rob M mentioned). It's best if they don't budge on price to go for extra such as service (if it is close), car touch ups, tax, mats etc.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Still haggle though - cause buying 2 cars will mean bigger discounts.

ok, i went to my 2 local stealers today, and had a little look and a chat with the salesmen.

The first one i went to, they had an lcr there, that had just been px a couple of days ago. It was a 54 plate with about 35k on the clock. It was fairly tidy, just a few scruffs on the wheels as far as i could see. Wasnt allowed to test drive because it hadnt been inspected yet as it had only just come in. In regards to the beeza, they had no 5 doors which we really want, just a few 3 door sx's which were ok but not really what we were looking for. The salesman said the cupra would be going up for 13995 which is far to expensive for us. Usual salesman wouldnt get it into his head that is was to expensive for me and he insisted i came for a test drive. i told him i would get back to him.

In the 2nd stealers we went to, my missus found the ideal car she was looking for on the forecourt. It is 2004 ibiza sx 5 door in metallic black with aircon etc and only 20k on the clock. It was up for 5,995. had a little look round at it then i went in to ask the lcr question as there wasnt one to be seen.
The salesman i spoke to said unfortunately we aint got any, but i think the manager over heard and piped up. He said they have got a 2003 lcr being px because someone has bought the new cupra and are waiting for it to be built and it should be here this month sometime. It has only 30k on the clock with 1 owner from new and he said it has been well looked after. Sounds good to me. Had a little chat and explained what i would be px'ing and i was looking at paying the rest cash. Tried to get a price out of him for the lcr and he said as a guess it would be between 9 and 10 k. getting better by the minute.:D

explained to him about the second car i was looking to buy , and i got a positive reaction. He said i could have first refusal on the lcr and took my name and number etc. We then went outside to look at the beeza again, and he came out and got the keys for us to have a look inside. Very nice. Left it at that and walked away to our car.
When we drove past the forecourt on our way home about 2 mins l8r, we saw the salesman putting a sold sign in the beeza we had been looking at.

we are hoping that this means they are going to hang on to the beeza for a few weeks for us till we can see the lcr, or does it means they have sold it to some one else?

What do you reckon then every one?

i am very tempted indeed.

oh i forgot to mention the lcr is red, which is what i wanted

Good news about second dealer.... bad news about the sold sign going up in the Beeza :( I'm sure there will be others that come in between now and the LCR arriving though, so all is not yet lost :)

edit - Just typed my post as you typed your second! I very much doubt they would take the Beeze off the forecourt unless you paid a holding deposit. For all they know, you'll never come back again so they wont want to put off potential buyers by saying it's sold.

If you could get the LCR for the £10k cash you have, or less ;) then go for it as that leaves you whatever change you have from that, plus your current car, to put towards the Beeza.

But that does then open the possibility of selling your car privately and hopefully getting more cash for it. If you're in no urgent rush to replace your Mrs' car this might be a better option.

i am in no rush to get her new car, but unfortunately she is !!!
i just rung the garage to see if it actually is sold and it is :( some one phoned up and bought it just as we were looking at it.

i am reallly dubious about selling mine private because i really h8 dealing with people who will pick holes, kick tyres and generally be awkward. i think if i can manage to get her an ibiza similiar to the one mentioned, my new lcr and they take the px, i will go for that for ease.

anyone know the seat factory where the cupras are built. Could you please give them a ring and tell them to hurry up cos i want the lcr now!!!

i know what u mean about selling privately, the guy who came to look at my focus floored the accelerator while in neutral on the drive and then questioned a slight exhaust rattle!!!!! :-o b*****d!

sold it cheap but at least i got the cash in the bank.

yes that is exactly the sort of thing i dont want. i know that if i get some knob head come look/test drive my car and rags it like a fool , i would be only able to bite my tongue for about 3 secs, then i would have to tell him to fcuk off. I love my cars to much to see them abused by strangers.

Infact i still havent told my car yet that i am getting rid of her. I hope she doesnt take it to bad............
