Annoying drone from rear

Hi all

My car seems to have an annoying drone at around 20 to 30 mph, seems to be coming from the rear of the car somewhere. Maybe tyre noise? not sure. anyone else noticed this  The more i drive the car the more this sound annoys me. Doesn't seem to be getting worse, just the fact that its there.

The car has the 17" rims.

U can't have it all!

TBH I find the road noise an advantage, it seems to quieten everyone down as you can't hear each other speak below 30mph so they generally don't bother. If I'm on my own I have to have the cd playing at around level 17 to drown out the drone but at least I get where I'm going quickly, in style and reasonably economical. :rocker:

Back from the dead
Invest in a big roll of Dynamat or brown bread (sound deadening).

I used to coat the boot and wheel wells of my Leon's and the door skins in it.

Remedied a lot of the problem. Ibiza Mk4 rear arches / panels also benefitted from it (remove interior trim and pile it on).

Other than that its just something you have to get used to.

Swapped wheels from front to back the other night. The annoying grumbling noise is now at the front of the car instead of the rear. This must me something to do with the factory fit Bridgestone Potenza tyres (Pirelli P6000 now on the rear with no sign of noise).

When my wife drove the car to work following the wheel swap she phoned me to ask what the hell i'd done to the car as it was so noisy

Has anybody else who has these tyres on their car had any problems with these tyres or similar problems.

It was the Seat dealer from where i purchased the car that recomended swapping the front/rear wheels. The dealer also said that this is a problem they have encountered before but more commonly on the Leon and is caused by an unusual wear pattern occuring on the rear tyres after the miles rack up

I have this problem with my Toledo - diagnosed as both n/s wheel bearings rumbling! Front n/s starts at low speed and rear comes in at over 30mph and is very loud at higher speeds.

Booked in next week for this to be rectified - also cruise control conrtrol just packed up, I suspect it is the stalk unit as I can't scroll my phonebook on the BT car kit.

Greetings,

Have had my (05reg 22k)) 2l tdi for nearly 7 months now, i got it from main Spur (main dealer - Wimbledon / Hampton Court) and in the first 3 months I owned it, the thing needed 3 bearings replacing, both front and nearside rear, all were causing a drone as descibed by previous posters from approx 45-50mph.
The dealer fortunately as expressed in a different thread was very courteous and proffesional in getting it sorted.

The dealer did admit that they had "similair issues on quite a few others!!"

It's now running smooooth and quiet.

Cheers
Mark.

Replaced the two front tyres with new Uniroyal rainsport1. The annoying drone has now gone.

If anybody starts noticing the same symptoms with their car a wheel swap from front to back is worth a try.

Hi Cab,
Thanks for the update.
I had the rectification work done on my Toledo - 2 n/s wheel bearings replaced.
Technician stated front was slightly noisy and rear was actually OK.
Surprise, surprise - I still have really bad droning from the rear so perhaps it is a tyre problem. I have the original Pirellis on the rear and Toyo T1R on the front, which I had put on at about 16k miles - these are now getting low at 28k miles, so may put these on the rear and get a new pair for the front.

Certainly sounds like the same problem as i was having. Would recomend a wheel swap from front to back to be sure though :)
