Ive finally bought the car ive been after for ages...... A 1997 (R) Ibiza GTI 16v!.

She is in pearl red with only 1 previous owner and only 67k on the clock. Payed £1800 for it!

The car has been well looked after and serviced every 12 months. It is immaculate inside.

Bad points:

-Dint on the back quarter panel where the previous owner had hit a post
-Slight bubbling on the boot lid just below the back window (apparently this is common)
-Part of the 'T' missing from the 'GTI16v' badge on the grille (im currently looking for a new one but can't find one anywhere!)
-Passenger side window getting stuck when going back up
-Wheels have seen better days but hopefully going to refurb them and spray them white.
-It also has some stickers on either side of the car at the bottom saying "16 valves" which will be coming straight off!!

Plans:

Trying to leave it pretty much standard, just with subtle mods i.e lowering. Been looking at springs and they are pretty cheap for the gti. Going to tidy up all the body work as soon as i raise the funds.

Cam belt was changed at 50k and iam told that the top mounts are prown to going so need to get that looked at.

Any advice of things to watch out for would be great!

Enjoy it :)

Good plan with the suspension, why not consider mk3 20VT 5 spokes - they're cheap, readily available & will look better than the aging ronal's

I'd also look at just debadging (saves trying to source old badges)

Welcome dude! :)

The GTi badges are hard to find.. Seat have discontinued the rear ones. If you find anywhere that has them please let me know!

I'd like to put some MK3 alloys on but I can't find any at the moment so I'm going to get the Ronals refurb'd in either black or gun metal grey.

What interior does it have?

Which ones do you need mate? I think I've got some "2.0 16v" red rear badges from when I replaced them with a "cupra". I think they say 2.0 16v and not GTi, but I will let you know on Saturday when I get back from Uni as they are at home.

Nice car! I just sold mine in that colour!

Mk3 wheels are the way to go - for proof, click this link! http://ibizagti.fotopic.net/c1247279.html

Sounds like you're gonna be doing the same as I did to mine. It was lowered 40mm on Koni/FK suspension, new top mounts, MK3 wheels, repaired window regs, I also removed the 16 valves from the side, they're made out of paper or something as they're so easy to get off! They leave no glue on the car either!

I have my GTI 2.0 16v rear badges from it - I might stick them on eBay if they're in demand :)

i would love to do my mk2 up, but its only a 1.4 and the suspension is knackered i reckon. would need most of it replacing with wishbone+bushes+mounts+as well the the suspension

not worth it on my current car, and really need to look at moving to a diesel for fuel economy as well which is a shame

the GTI16v badge won't be much more. It just clips on

Damn, thats the one I need, a GTI 16v clip on front grill badge. Seems that a Chav has tried to nick my badge, and as they pulled on it the snapped off the "v" and now my badge only says "GTi 16" and everyone keeps asking if its a 1.6

So you say just phone up the Stealership and ask for a front badge?
