Universal Filters

I have seen alot of performance filters which state that they are universal, does anyone know how true this is, by that i mean does it realy matter what you bolt on to your car?they are all alot cheaper than the dedicated type, but then they dont have the name, ie pipercross or K&N and so on, so this might expain the lower costs, i have seen both the exposed type like K&N and the enclosed type all around £20.

Think about that one mate, check everyones sigs and specs of there car, do you see anyone listing or shouting about a 20quid universal filter, if cash is tight buy a panel and smooth the airbox and a bit of ducting, 40quid tops?

BCM sorry did i upset you at some point,Thanks for pointing all that out to me, i also have a induction kit which cost more than £20, and am not shouting about these filters ALL i was doing was asking a general question on the subject and inerested in peoples opinions, and the general tech info on filters, when new people post on here they seem to get jumped on from a great hight, for no good reason.

Hmm. Dude. No 1 is jumping at you. The guys on her are pasionat (spelling) about their cars and bolting on a cheap filter wont be a good idea. Save your money and get a nice one. Or a panel?

Anyway back to your point, what I was saying is that cheap filters are cheap for a reason, expensive ones warrent there price because they have been tested and developed to suit your model of car, they have proven gains great track record and help your breath more easily as well as cope with the air volumes required for a turbo or tuned car!

As said, with the cars on this site, they are well maintained(usually), modified to a tastefull standard and use good quality tried and tested parts. what they are not is 1000quid Corsa's, VTR's etc.. with rubbish parts, cheap tacky welded on backboxes and "Lacks Power" mesh air filters.

I have been coming to this site for advice and tips which i have found by using search so have had no need to ask questions such as which whoosh DV should i use, so when i ask a reasonable question i was just shocked buy the aggressive response.
:Scorchio; thanks for the advice but I was not asking for advice on buying one, i have already spent £138 on my air intake, all i was trying to do was see what people thought of them and the tech info on what made the good (expensive) ones what they are, and the last thing i put on my car is anything chavvy, some of us have taste you know.

Try your luck with a universal one. Thing I think you will find is that filters designed to fit specific applications are layered accordingly, in terms of foam/paper/mesh. The amount of air flow drawn through them in CFM is designed to be just right for optimum performance of any given application.

That cannot be said for £20 Halfords jobbies. What's good for a 1.2 Corsa (a **** car) is not suitable for a 1.8T 20v Leon (race engines... 350BHP anyone?). If you're on a budget... take the panel filter. But if you've already bought parts.. then try eBay or the guys on here for a top-name filter. The results will be superior to that of a bolt-on universal type.

Before anyone jumps on me regarding my comment about the 1.8T being a race engine. Check: http://www.formula-palmer-audi.com/brochure-intro.aspx if you don't know what the Formula Palmer Audi's are.. then there ya go.

I've been running a universal Jetex JR filter for about a year not, far better flow than either my Dynatwist and BMC.

Go to the jetex site and pick what size you need, mine was about 45 quid delivered.

The issue isn't a case of just letting in as much air as possible.. if that was the case, people would just spread a pair of tights over their ducting and cut out the middle man. It's about keeping the air moving fluidly and ensuring minimal crap enters the engine.

Does the Jetex one sound good?

I have to agree with phillc to some point though far too many people on here jump at you when you just ask for opinions on matters.
Some people just post responces for the sake of posting a responce.
If people dont have anything constructive to say in the matter why bother wasting the time to type something out. just exit the thread!!!

I've just had this done to me and really dont see the point personally i couldn't give a dam if some ***** thinks he is the don.

but back to the point of the matter. I personally wouldn't toach universal filters unless you were basically going to experiment and try to the the job of our friends in research & development teams at the great filter company
