Don't know why but I've never been keen on loud pipes on cars. Just seem pointless somehow. I suppose it stems from all those boy racers in their body kitted 1.1 corsas with defening pipes on that blow out your eardrums as their car crawls past, (whilst being overtaken by a mum in her focus).

I think most "sports" cars come with pipes that are plenty fruity enough to be honest. Louder ones just annoy the hell out of all your neighbours and ensure you do get done for that minor violation the police stopped you for, not worth the points on your licence IMO, (especially as they dont give any significant performance improvement).

I know exactly what you mean. But I think you're looking at it from the wrong angle...

Loud pipes on a Saxo / Corsa / Fester / Other shopping trolly is stupid. It's a small engined city car FFS, not a race car, not a performance car and no matter how loud your exhaust or how big your spoiler, that's not going to change.

But if you match the exhaust note to the car, you can have a very nice sounding exhaust without sounding like a chav twat. The Leon isn't a 'loud' car, so it doesn't suit big loud exhausts. But something tasteful on a Cupra or Cupra R with a bit more of a bark to it is a good thing IMO. Something that lets you know you're driving a 200+bhp car.
Go stupid and stick a slash cut, jap style crappy thing on it though and you'll look a plank and no better than Chav boy in his Saxo.

Some cars get away with louder exhausts. Jap cars that look the part, for instance. But if the sound doesn't suit the style, it's just wrong.
