Just thought I'd give a brief update of this conversion thus far.

I've now covered approx 1000 miles in the Golf the first UK converted example. I picked the car up 3 weeks ago and recently took it back to Awesome for some alterations mainly to the APR code. The recirculation pump was taken out and was creating a fault in conjunction with a N249 Wastegate re circulation fault which we incidently changed.

I had a panick on when I lost power and it was eventually traced to a boost leak which we resolved by changing a pipe and clip used.

The engine mounts were soft on my car causing the DP to occasionally move and vibrate on the steering rack whiich again we adjusted. I changed the engine mounts to VF engineering mounts including the pendulum mount.....what a mistake!!! :cry:
It made the car unbearable....terrible harshness coming into cabin and vibration was just blimin awful....ok if it is purely a track car but as an everyday car it took the comfort and civility away.

The cure was a set of new TT mounts which are far more robust than the original Golf's and had cured the engine movement and there is no harshness. :funk:

The car still ceases to amaze me 340+ bhp and everyday economy of 33-37mpg!!! The delivery is early super smooth and is very refined pulling well over 7000rpm. It is so effortlessly quick riding on so much torque you don't have to rev it. It looks OE under the bonnet and as a dual purpose vehicle ie road and track it certainly ticks all the right boxes.

Car is being featured in VW Driver in the next month or two.

how does this conversion manage to give u everyday economy of 33-37mpg?

I mean that's almost diesel like mpg figs.

i hope its not because of engine running lean all the time. hate to see the money saved on petrol being spent on a costly engine rebuild when it goes bang!

Always thought to make big power you needed to throw in more petrol with more air to make bigger bang!

It's probably because the spool is higher up the rev range, so at 50-70 odd in top gear your not on boost, so you can just pootle along. IHI boys have said the same.

Ian, is your's a 5sp or a 6sp? Do you miss the low down spool at all?

I too would be worried about a lean mixture with figures as high as those.

With my car on a jabba remap (renound for running a lean mixture) i was able to get 400+ miles on a long motorway trip from a tank of petrol. I have CC now, nothing else has changed apart from mapping and i am now struggling to break 300miles on a long motorway run:shrug:

All that has changed was the mapping, jabba renound for running lean vs CC who are renound for running ''too safe'' rich mixtures.

Ive convinced myself its down to the mapping as nothing else has changed for me:shrug:

Even when i really try, not taking revs over 3000 rpm in any gear and not using positive boost pressure on gauge, i still cannot extract 30+mpg from the car. On my old jabba map, i could easly sit mid-high 30's.

Anyway glad your enjoying it:)

Problem with that argument mitchy is that on a cruise, your cars running + or - 1% of stoich, or your cat won't work. So mapping doesn't come into it on a cruise.
I can get 33mpg from mine on a 300milee journey, but hooning it over the last couple of miles on the way home, will drop that to 25 very quickly.
I generally get 18-20mpg over a tank of mixed if slightly spirited driving.
But it was the same when it was nearly standard.
People who say they get 35mpg from a 1.8T obey every speed limit (policemen like Ian), or drive everywhere down hill.

When the conversion was originally completed Jim took the car for a 300+ round trip tp Cadwell Pk where it was noted that it gave over 320 miles to the tank on a very mixed journey.

Yesterday when Mr B from Autometrix came to do an article it still gave 26-27 on mixed tests including performance testing. Overall I am very pleased with the dual personality of the car...it still gives supercar performance but is very much an everday proposition...it doesn't cost a fortune to run which is an obvious bonus.

As for the mapping I am very much of the oppinion that it has been expertly mapped....running lean it doesn't as measured on the dyno logging. This map has been written for some time and used on this kit for a long time without issues.

As for driving between 2-3k there is more than enough pull from good early spoil even before hitting peak boost at approx 3k where 330lbs are available.


I know there are a few more people already booked in at Awesome for the kit and I can only recommend the kit and cannot fault the service provided Jim and the lads at Awesome.

I will be hopefully attending just a few trackdays this year including the Ford RS day at Combe in July and Autometrix in July and Inters of course if anyone would like to take a look at the install or pax a ride around Combe.

Seeing how it will cope on track day use will be the real test as you know Ian.

Tank to tank test by Awesome and MFA seeing 35+ on a local A road run using sensible throttle technique.

Obviously hoofing it around sees sub 25mpg when you really use the max performance available.


Gotta do some track work soon Bill

Ian can you advise how much the TT mounts costed, was it both sides? or just the single mount under the car?

i am having an issue that the back box is hitting the floor of the car under hard torque.

I've got the uprated Neuspeed insert on the pendulum mount.

The TT mounts were approximately £80 each....worth it though...solid with no movement but has stock feel ie no harshness coming into the cabin.

The VF ones I found totally transformed the feel of the car and made it into totally track car and not a road car...everything shook to bits in the car hence my decision to change to the TT ones which are alot stronger than the OE Golf items.

I too was suffering from movement under load the DP touching the steering rack. This was re adjusted and the new mounts have repositioned the DP nicely with plenty of clearance.

ok, i have a pendulum insert on mine too.

pretty expensive for a mount, how many hours labour for the 3?

I was charged an hour's labour.....price included VAT.....think I will check bill as I think they were cheaper than that.

TTs can be quite handy for mounts. They also have solid rubber wishbone bushes, if you aren't into poly stuff there.

Turbo kit sounds ace.
