Lambda saga continues..

So i took the LCR to the dealers today for them to do the coolant sensor (im lazy by the way) and the lambda on the D/P. They did the coolant sensor fine, but when it came to fitting the Lambda they told me that they needed the car for an hour and a half so they could fit the sensor, and do something called LONG CODING. Now i had not heard this mentioned before, so i asked what it was, they explained that a Lmabda degrades over time, and the car learns to accept this. Now if they were to fit a new sensor the readings could be very different, and the car might not even run or start????? :shrug:
So they would need the car for 20 minutes ( after they told me an hour and a half) to do this and set the car back up. They also said oh its remapped, not sure if we can even do it..well the map has nothing to do with fiting a new sensor does it?

NOW.. what i want to know... i have been told i can just plug the new sensor in and away i go..no problems. This was from the people who mapped my car. And the dealer is telling me it needs long coding..SO WHO DO I BELIEVE...any comments and suggestions welcome please..

If I were in your shoes I'd take the car back to whoever remapped it. If they are happy that the sensor can be changed without this hassle, let them do it.

I've never heard of what you've mentioned, yet many times on this forum people have discussed these sensors so I'm sure it would have come up before. I could be entirely wrong, but I suspect this is a money making exercise above all else.

ROB, EXACTLY what i thought. it takes 5 mins for them to fit a lambda, so there would be no money in it for them. I went to see the chap who mapped it, he told me to get the part and just fit it myself.

I was just after a few other opinions, and to see if anyone had come across this at all as i have NEVER heard it mentioned, and i have done enough reading up on this matter.

Ive changed my post lambda sensor! P155 easy to do! Jack the car screw of the lambda and disconnect the connector!
They must be a slow bunch if it takes them this long!

matt... all they are going to do is reset the ECU (which can be done in seconds with vag com) or by disconnecting the battery for 15/20mins so the ECU looses its memory!

and when you start the car up for the first time with the new lambda don't touch the accelerator peddle (like for a TB alignment which will also happen at the same time!)

the ECU will start again and learn "its new settings" so to speak!

thats my 2p worth!


plus the guy who mapped your car has said the same... fit it yourself! i.e. no "long coding" needed!

should take about 10 mins to remove and refit TIGHTLY the new pre cat lambda! :yes:

Cheers J, think i will just go and pick the sensor up tom and do it myself. If i disconnected the battery whilst doing the job and then went an had a brew, that would see me reset on the ECU.

Made my mind up, gonna do it myself, and not be a lazy sh*t.

thats what i told you to do in the first place! :p

just be very careful with the new lambda matt... put it in the thread very carefully, try not to knock it about against the bulk head/DP as you could* damage it! and obviously screw it in hand tight and then use a spanner to get it tight enough and THEN plug in the connector! ;)
