10k Service

Champs,

My car needs a service and I want to try and offset what my mechanc geezer can do with what the dealer would do and charge for. Any Ideas?

I was just thinking that my guy can change the oil and filter etc etc, all I want from the dealer is the stamp in that service book. So instead of paying the £250+vat whatever for a service I can get it cheaper, can someone give me some head up on this at all??

(guessing here but...) I would assume that the Stealer wouldn't stamp your book if they don't do all of the work required for the service .. you'd probably get something along the lines of "we can't guarentee the work carried out elsewhere, so we can't stamp it"

Depends how well you know your Dealer tho...if you're on fairly good terms it may be worth an ask?!

Isn't it written in the service book what generally happens at each service?

If not, then its another manufacturer that does this.

You're 100% right. The service book lists everything that needs to be changed or checked at each service. It's amazing what you can find in the manual too

You will probably find tha the first service isnt as much as £250 + VAT!

If your looking at 10k service im guessing that the car is still in warranty. Stop me if Im wrong, but does that not mean that you have to get the car serviced at the dealers or else you loose your warranty? I cant imagine it will cost that much at the dealers either.

Nope, it doesn't. This used to be the case, but the law was changed to stop dealers and warranty companies enforcing this on customers. The claim was dealers could force people to use their main dealer service centres for servicing new cars and then bump up the price to rip them off.

But the government put a stop on this a couple of years back. The only requirements now, from the warranty point of view, is the car is serviced by a reputable garage or mechanic, according to the manufacturers schedule and using original or approved parts.

So long as those requirements are met, and you can prove it, you can have the car serviced anywhere. Just make sure you keep every receipt and log every part of the service or else if you stumble across a fussy dealer they could try and claim it's not been serviced correctly. But with receipts and proof that it has, they cannot refuse to help you.
