my brother needs 4 new tyres on his 130 tdi sport
at the moment it has the factory sized ones on it but I think they are an expensive/uncommon size (205/45/16) AFAIK same as my FR

has anyone changed all 4 and gone for a slightly different size that is cheaper and what size did you go for ?

thanks

i wouldnt change the size can knock the speedo out, if just by a little bit, the tyre size isnt that uncommon and they are about 70 quid each for a half decent tyre try www.e-tyres.co.uk i use them all the time and they will come to any address and balance all the wheels, new valves and that much cheaper than your kwik fits etc

dont think he will want to splash out £243 :( he bought the sport to save money

yes they are 205/45/16 but they are not the original tyres (60k miles)

as for knocking the speedo out, all speedos read under anyway so he will prob be ok to go for 195/50/16 and still be ok

if you have the trip computer, do a steady 70 with the average speed indicated then hit reset and see what comes up, bet it's 66

will look at www.e-tyres.co.uk for him as he isn't on tinternet

thanks

why would you want to put narrower tyres on one, they struggle to grip anyway!

That's the right tyre size, mines has them too.

MyTyres has got them, don't know how much though.

I'd put 195/45s on it, you only lose 1cm of grip and the speedo is only thrown out by 0.9MPH when you hit 60.

From a tyre size calculator:

Speedometer reading with 195/45/16 is 1.5% too fast.
When your speedo is reading 60MPH, you are actually travelling at 59.1MPH.

Down to 195/45 or up to 215/45 has only a couple of percent effect on rolling circumferance and speedo readings, as stated, not enough to worry about

having run 195/45s, I'd go to 215s actually, a little xtra depth in the sidewall is no bad thing on broken roads and potholes

I was really impresed with Proxes T1-Rs during the winter, my traction control had nothing to do anymore, however the wear rate is high so I won't be buying them again. back to Uniroyal Rainsports for me

ahh, that is the reply we were after :D

so any rubbing with the 215's ?

I think a little bigger in the sidewall is what is needed to cope with the bad streets where he lives

Nexen 3000 tyres are good - and quite cheap too - £200 for a set of 4. Dont be put of by the name - its what the tyres do that counts :p

If you put incorrectly sized tyres on your car make sure you tell your insurance, you don't want them not to pay out if you have an accident. Also if you put wider tyres on it you will reduce you fuel consumption, thus things will be more expensive in the long run.

The ones on my Beeza seem to be doing a good job at the moment (theyre not amazing - but fairly standard and cheap and should last longer than the F1's) - even was pushing it down some private roads - was good fun :)

I'd rather have tyres that stick to the road well in the wet and the dry, than shite plastic ones which are lethal and do nothing but slide around as soon as the road is cold or wet, at least with a softer compound tyre you get maximum grip all the time, which means you can extract maximum performance from ur car!! :D I'd rather pay a bit more for my tyres and get less life out of them but know I can lob it down a back road with total confidence!!

Rant over - SAY NO TO CRAP TYRES!!! :D

the standard tyres on my cupra (p-zero nero's) were pants but cant fault how they lasted ages of heavy driving! but i like the feel of perelli's as they are soft not harsh! so i bought the p-700 perelli's and im happy with them they cost me next to nothing and they last and they do an ok job  but i will be trying the T1R's or the F1's next as getting the power down is going to be a big problem :p
