Revs/idle at engine start dodgy

Pleae help anyone. When I start my car in the morning or if its not been on for a while, it idles higher on the rev counter than it should do. Whilst it is doing this the exhaust "chuffs" Then I have to touch the accelerator to keep it form juddering about. After about two minutes the engine whistles and it settles down immediately and is fine after this. Someone said it could be the exhauster???

When I start my LCR it revs around 1200 revs before settling down to about 700/800 but I always thought this was normal. It does sound like a clattery diesel when it starts and if its cold it can be a little jerky but nothing quite like what you're describing. As suggested try VAG.com or get down your nearest dealer.

dodgy idle is often a failing maf symptom


if you dont touch the accelorator, at idle what happens on the rev counter? steady 1200? will the car stall?

does the problem completely vanish once the engines warm and she settles to 800 revs?

As Traumapat says - its NORMAL :)
I think its the secondary airpump - after a matter of a min it should drop to a stead 7-800rpm.

Ideally i've been told to leave the car idling until the revs drop, and then drive off.

i guess that is more likely especially if its fine once warmed up.

easy cheap repair if it is:)

i had maf and temp go at the same time:doh:

afaik it is the choke. extra fuel ect. its also trying to heat up your cat quickly so it works properly.

dont all cars do this?:confused:

Yeah. It's the auto choke. As opposed to the big stick or "hangbag holder" (for the ladies) that you'd pull out on older cars. Any 90's+ car should do it from cold. Keeping the revs high helps prevent stalling while the engine gets going too.

thanks for all those.
I got it plugged into the computer at my local dealer and it had a fault code(can't find it at the mo) but the fella told me it meant air pressure leak, he said he checked all the hoses but could not see anything wrong and that the next step would be to start stripping the engine.
If i don't touch the accelerator it would stall soemtimes, and fluctuate around 1200 rpm (not steady) and if i try driving it before it whistles it splutters all over the place. Once it whistles it settles down to 8oo rpm abd runs fine.

you could also clean and reset the throttle body... do a search on here for how.

thats known to cause stalling when it gets gunked up.

you could also try starting from cold which the maf connector unplugged. if it runs fine its the maf or possibly the connection arching when damp.. see the above thread. i wouldnt run it with the maf unplugged but at least you can rule it out.

the leak is possibly nothing to worry about. if its check dv pressure loss it maybe a real leak but mines known to throw this up for no reason. id double check for leaks but i cant understand how this can only affect a cold engine.

i think what hes getting is poor idling during cold start up. instead of sitting at 1200 its fluctuating to the point of stalling.
