I have been reading all posts on this topic but cant quite work out where you get this from-is it when you buy a cable or do you down load from somewhere?
If Ebay cable are crap then whats the best place to get a proper one from?

Some one should write an instruction book for this methinks.

my cheap ebay cable off alpha-bid does everything. Haven't found anything on VAG-COM which it won't do.

Yes, I've got one. Great for checking and clearing fault codes. I'd also hoped to program a new remote (CL only, not immobiliser) but it flagged up that I needed to 'activate' VAG-COM, which requires a S/W licence from Ross-tech @ $99 (or free if you buy one of their cables).

I bought that cable too, during the fault finding process it came up and said Vag Com must be activated to continue?

Most likely you used the Auto-Scan function which indeed requires a fully licensed version. The Auto-Scan is supposed to go through the control modules automatically and read fault codes from them, but in the Shareware version you have to access the control modules individually by using the [Select] button on the main screen instead.
