Hi all.

Well, many of you may have noticed I have been looking for a Cupra R and I have given myself a budget of around £8k to £8.5k for a 210bhp edition. I have testdriven one at a SEAT dealership and it is absolutely fantastic and was much more than I had expected.

The thing is is that the standard Cupra (when Revo'd) will also shoot up to 210bhp and I cannot feel that I will be wasting money on the Cupra R when I can get the same performance for a good £2k less.

For example, the cheapest LCR I have found recently was for £8,200 which was red with 76,000 miles (03 plate) whereas I found a Cupra in black with 40,000 miles (03 plate) for £5,900. If I had Revo'd this, the car all in would cost £6,500 which is around £2k cheaper than the Cupra R but with the same performance.

I do like the bodykit on the Cupra R plus the badging and exhaust system but what else does the Cupra R offer over a standard Cupra which justifies me spending the more money? Will I regret not going for the Cupra R later down the line?

Basically the 210 over the 180 has a bigger turbo and other bits. the Clicky should explain.

Also, you are entirely right in saying that the LC chipped gives similar power to a LCR. But what happens when you get used to that? You have nowhere to go without BIG bills. With the LCR, as standard, that's just the start of it. A simple remap will give you 260+bhp and that will put a bigger grin on your face for a very long time!

Then by the time you have spent your money on wheels, suspension, body styling etc you'll still wish you had gone out and bought an LCR in the first place.

You say you can save £2k by buying an LC... well what does that buy you if you really want an LCR?

£500 on a remap
£600 on wheels and tyres minimum (lets say you get lucky)
That leaves you £900 to cover exhaust, suspension, body styling and brakes.

Then you have the fact that insurance on a modified car is always more than a standard car, so the LCR standard will probably be cheaper.

There is a reason people buy the LCR over the LC. This isn't to say the LC isn't a great car, as it really is, but it's not an LCR. And if you really want, and have your heart set on an LCR... will you be happy with an LC? Or will you be looking back wondering if you did the right thing every time you see an LCR?

It was just that I drove the 210bhp LCR and was absolutely astounded with its power that I don't think I would be Revo'ing it above that as it was more than enough for me (until I probably get bored and want to experience more power).

The LC does look superb as well although it doesn't have the R seats plus I do like the red-stitching you find in the LCR plus the exhaust pipe, plus the wheels, plus the lower appearance, plus the front bumper, plus the immense handling, plus the power etc etc etc.

I just had a mild relapse - I shall get the LCR as if I don't I will regret it.:cartman:

exactly, i bought a cupra r at a decent price, high miles but full SEAT service history with belts and water pump replaced, 20vt engine wso wasn't worried bout the miles so went for it, LOVE IT!

then R owners go out and buy better brakes/discs/pads.
buy new wheels
engine mods (i seem to remember a BAM going bang after very few miles)
coilovers
konig seats/recaro's
everyman anf his dog changes the exhuast for a miltek.
fmic ? TIP? boost hoses?

the choice is going to be down to you mate.depends if its staying as a stage 1 car or beyond that.

personally speaking,i like the look of the later leon cupra over the R,unless they were both yellow and then i'd have to think long and hard over the look alone.

but thats just me

Not all owners do that, as some bought the car knowing that those items were already good.

Engine mods... sure, because 210-225bhp isn't enough after a while. With an LC, you're stuck with that.
The other things are parts that people change to personalise the car, not because there is anything wrong with them, or they aren't good enough. That applies to all cars though... you can buy bodykits for Aston Martins you know ;)

The only exception to that might be brakes... but that's only because you can buy aftermarket discs and pads for the same price, or less, than standard items. It's not about the Brembos not being good enough at all.

i love my LCR, exactly as you said, its a much better starting block!
Looks, engine, interior,.... if you did want to progress a lot of the goodies are high enough spec not to need to much attention (interior, wheels, brakes)
Just get an R mate, you'll forever wonder "what if" or "wish i'd" if you dont!

having had both, and ALSO previously having compromised when I bought a Golf and a GTV and a Corrado (i didnt get the top of the range) I regretted it. I would say LCR DEFINATELY.
Also, you get a bespoke chassis designed by Seat racing especially for the LCR, and the LCR is also hand finished by Seat Racing in Spain.

There is no contenst. LCR!

i dont understand the engine comments? until you go past 320bhp the lc`s fine?

stronger rods maybe in an lcr but are you feasably ever going to need them?

The strength isn't in question... it's the power-per-pound ability that's the problem.

When you get into your league - i.e big turbo conversions - it really doesn't matter if you have an LC or and LCR. But for the rest of us, who just want the ability to use cost effective mods to increase power and torque to re-excite us, the LCR offers more options as the turbo has a higher performance ceiling.

A realistic 220ish-bhp is all you'll get from the LC. An inaccurate rolling road may show more, but in reality, that's about it. Beyond that you're talking Big Turbo and Big Bills!

An LCR starts with that power and for the same money can be taken up to 270-280bhp, which for many people is more than enough.

Exactly. I bought the LCR for those reasons. It's got "OO ahh" brakes. it's got massive 18" alloys which I'd never change. It's got the body kit and spoilers galore!

The best bit, 260bhp for only 400 notes! The car is in a sense already modified. I can't imagine doing anything else to it now apart from minor things. ICE, Xenons, and err a decent quality gear knob!

yep got you.. its just you seemed to be listing the differences. same engine.. its that laggy k04 turbo;) which gives the bigger remap.

i think a ko3s will go 240bhp with a good sports cat bigger dp but that is indeed the lot.

lcr i guess has the bigger toys. i guess if you plan to limit to 270, its got to be the lcr.. if you want more the lc comes back into play:blink: how wierd.
