i have had a tube for about 7 years now

Sounds like the every reproducing half used paint tins that populate my garden shed...infact I think it's got to the stage where they are actually keeping the shed together ;)

I've used MER on mine...pretty good results.

I always spray a bit of Hotrims Wheel Cleaner on them and leave it to work while I Jet Wash my wheels and then jet wash the pipes, then use metal polish to finsih off, works a treat ;)

I have a multifuel stove in my living room and the Stovax product I use for the glass plate is excellent for softening and removing both the caked on crap on wheels from the brake dust and also tar, soot, etc., that accumulates around the tailpipe rims ( I have a diesel).

Stovax do a gel formulation which you can leave on and come back to 10mins later and its still there. It's 6 quid a bottle and lasts me a long time.

And as AshTDiFR says, it justs jetwashes off along with the grime

I lent it to my neighbour today to do his BMW 735. His front wheels were almost black even after a jet wash. With Stovax gel and a toothbrush, they came up as good as new - no kidding!

Honestly i tried Megs NXT metal wax stuff and its not really any good at getting the proper black off, even tried wire wool and it wont shift it. If you have bought the car 2nd hand and there is alot of bacl around the bottom of the tips it wont come off atall.

I found this too. What I decided to do is get some wire wool and Autosol which are both quite abrasive to get rid of the black marks. I then used Meg's metal polish to get rid of any fine marks left by that combo to get it shiny and like new again :)

Took a little while, but was well worth it :D

Strange, I found NXT very effective. Did a Honda S2000 with minging pipes recently and got this result (was bloody hard work though admittedly):
