Booked my car in to have a couple of little issues sorted. Hes also going to give me a quote to do the cambelt.

He did say that a performance cambelt would be recommended if one exists..

Anyone know ?

cheers people

why do you doubt that ?

I presume he wouldnt have mentioned it if he didnt think it was a good idea ? He said he wasnt sure if they made one for this engine but said it would be a good idea if they did!!

True, but i would have thought that a part like that would not be compromised from the factory really. Still, worth looking into though.

load of old cobblers - I have 240hp 2L 16V and that runs with a std VAG belt, no issues at all

status subject to change
While im not aware of the timing belts on VAG cars being of poor quality or worse than others, timing belts are inheritantly important.
The results of failure can be massive.

I have seen timine belts being sold that are advertised as being of higher quality than the stock parts. But then they would say that as they are then more expensive.

If there are better quality belts available then it would make sense to use these. Particularly given than the part is a very small proportion of the cost of replacement.

i just had a conti tech kit fitted, they are now saying that if theyre belts are fitted by one of there dealers and its snaps they will replace all parts that get damaged (obviously the belt would still need to be changed when due) not sure if it covers modified engine's but its a pretty big thing to do, wouldnt think they would sell belts that didnt hold the power

All well and good, but i bet standard VW belts won't snap under the same conditions if changed when due. If they did, people would steer well clear of VAG cars. Same goes for any other manufacturer, how often do you hear of a cam belt snapping randomly on an unmodified car after its been changed as and when it was supposed to be. Bottom line is, a standard belt is more than up to the job if looked after.

performance belt LOL,

A car with 100 BHP and the same engine with 300 BHP does give any extra stress on a belt

It will speed up quicker but thats it.

Standard belts are good

Standard belts only snap when not replaced as they should be. Either that or bad fitting by someone.

No point wasting money on something you don't need :) Plus theres always the fact that the standard belts are very much tried and tested :)
