LCR, Eibach Rear ARB & Exhaust

I posted a few weeks ago about the standard backbox on my LCR hitting the rear Eibach anti-roll bar. Despite having the backbox bashed/welded a little to make more clearance (about 2" now) it is still hitting off the ARB when going over large bumps.

I think the only solution to this is to buy a new exhaust. However, I need to find an aftermarket exhaust that has a shorter backbox than standard. I need the backbox to start about 3-4 inches more towards the rear of the car to provide enough clearance. The question is, do any aftermarket exhausts have a backbox that will fit this criteria?

I found an image of the standard backbox vs milltek one - the milltek backbox is even longer than standard

Exhaust Knocking

I have had this problem with more than one car in the past.

Both times the problem has been cured when the rubber mounts get past their "new" stage and harden up. This stops the exhaust moving so much and on my 2 cars this stopped the knocking against the rear Roll Bar after a couple of weeks

i had a rattling exhaust on my old mondeo. it had a twin exit scorpion system on there and i solved the problem by fitting poly exhaust hangers. i think powerflex sell them.

yeh my bro has a twin exit powerflow on his zetec s and he has had to fit poly hangers to stop it knocking!! powerflex for about £3!!! Worth a shot first before you start shelling out on a new zorst!!! but if you really want a new zorst speak to company that does powerflow. they will make it to your requirements so they could fit you a smaller backbox and but a bigger middle box in to compensate!! although powerflow are not imho the best systems on the market!!

Poweflow's quality is entirely in the hands of your local agent. As they are a franchise, not a chain of garages, any exhaust fabricator can buy into the name and product range. If you're lucky, your local fabricator will be good at what they do and you'll get a quality exhaust. If not, steer clear, as a badly made exhaust is the last thing you need.

I had this issue with an Eibach rear and standard back-box; solved by switching to a Neuapeed Rear.

I would guess that because the miltek is much skinner, even though it is longer, it should be fine...

I think there's a few peeps with Eibach rears on with no problems, but not sure what back box they're running.

There are people running Eibach ARB's and the OE backbox, but they have had to beat a lump into the side of the backbox to make it work. There was a thread about it a week or so ago where a few people who have gone down this route commented.

I thought about "adjusting" my back box when I realised what was causing the banging.

I have to say, Ju must've heated it up a fair amount, and really smacked the hell out of it - where the ARB hits is right on the corner where the seam is. Wouldn't fancy it myself...

To be honest, I wouldn't fancy it either. If I knew this was going to be a problem I'd simply buy the Neuspeed ones. But if all else fails, however dirty it is, there is a solution at least.

I honestly don't think it really is a "solution" - need to get the car up in the air, drop the exhaust, heat it up and hit it with a big hammer

If anyone's got a banging Eibach because they were told it would fit an LCR, without being told that it'll hit the stock back box - they ought to be getting their money back and fitting a Neuspeed.

Of course if 'they' had searched the *sticky* at the top of the Leon Mk1 section on LCR suspension they would have found the answer that the Eibach doesn't fit with an OEM back box  ;)
