Window Tints, And Insurance Premium!

hey, iv dont a few searches and havent really come up with any answers...

my first Q is, what is the LEGAL limit 4 tints?

and second is, how much does it bump up your premium...

for example, im payin 1300, how much would it go up???

I think (from a very rusty memory) that you can go 25% on front windows & 30% on rears.

Not sure if it will put your premium up, I haven't notified Insurance in the past, and seeing as loads more cars are coming out of the factory now with tinted windows I don't think it should make a difference for aftermarket work now.

I doubt very much that any insurance company will load your premium as a result of having tinted windows (especially if you have security film)

There's no limit on rear tints, behind the B pillar. You can have total black out film put on if you want.

Rear side and rear screen glass has no limits. You could spray paint them black if you wanted. Front driver and passenger windows are a no-no. The front windscreen can't be touched. The front side glass has to let 75% of light through. As glass in cars is already tinted and allows about 80% light through you can't legally tint the front windows either now. Nobody makes a tinting film that lets 95% of light through.

is that something extra you have to get?

anyone recommend anyone in cardiff, i just want a slight tint all over.

AXA ddn't could change in paint as a mod a few years ago until I crashed my elise with a 7 way flip!!!!

They did not want to pay out and my car was off the road for over 6 months

They eventually paid out after a lot o arguing...and yes I have been in the claims industry for over 15 years.

Tell them everything and get everything in writing if they say it make snot ifference as when it comes to making a claim something a sales bid said 9 month ago is not worth anything (unless they can actually find the tape-unlikely)!!!

The Police will generally make you rip them off at the road side, of if this not practical, they will force you to get them removed properly and then have your car inspected within 7 days to show it's been done. If you fail to do that, you'll get a fine and points.

Not worth the hassle IMO. I loved the tints I had on an old car (Focus) and would love them again, but since the law has changed it's not worth it. You may blag it and get away with it, but there is more chance of getting caught with it and having your time and money wasted as well as the chance of the fine.

Has been for a year or so. From the factory your windows are already tinted. Without touching them they probably allow around 80% of the light through, and the legal minimum is 75% so as you can see, you're already right on the legal limit. If you have any tint applied to the window, even the lightest shade, you will block more light than is legally allowed, which means you're technically breaking the law.

When this law first came into place, it was indeed. Any car manufactured before Jan 2004 didn't apply. But around a year later they changed that to apply to all cars.
