A couple of questions - Leon 20VT Sport

Hello. I'm the proud owner of a 2000X Leon 20VT Sport after changing from a MK4 Golf GTI 1.8T.

Firstly, I'd just like to say how impressed I am with the car, I've had it less than a week but I know why people rave about them so much. Also this forum is really useful especially the how to guides.

There are a couple of things I wanted to ask:

1. What is the differnce between the Sport and the Cupra? Mine is listed as a Sport but it has a cupra badge on the back. Is it just that someone has put a different bdage on it?

2. My Golf had a Trip Computer that calculates MPG, Ave Speed, etc. The Leon has similar stalks although not switch on the side to scroll through. Does this mean that it can't have this feature?

3. My Electric mirriors do not work at all. They appear to be electric folding mirros but none of the controls work even for the glass adjustment. before I start stripping the door card is there anything that I can check first? I can't seem to locate any fuses or relays for them?

Any help that you can provide me would be greatly appreciated.

Hi mate, welcome to the forum :)

I could be wrong (and somebody will correct me if I am) but 'Sport' and 'Cupra' are the same cars, it's just the name branding that changed but the car remained the same.

Re the trip computer.... do you have the little screen for it? The trip computer is controlled via the right hand side stalk, the one that controls the wipers. On the end of this there should be two buttons to control the options. I know there were some changes to very early Cupras (Sports) that changed some of the dash features, so it might be this wasn't an option for earlier cars... but I'm not sure. Somebody will be along to confirm soon enough though :)

And the fuse for the mirrors is the same fuse that controls the central locking, mirrors, interior lights and a couple of other bits and bobs too. If all the rest of them work, but the mirrors don't, the problem exists with the mirrors or there wiring. It could be that somebody has had them disconnected in the past and not reconnected it properly? Or it could be a physical fault somewhere.

Not a great help I know... but there you go

All the first 2000 year cars were called Cupras and came fully loaded with Electric leather seats, Autodim rear view mirror, and rain sensitive wipers and cost £18995 new They didnt come with a trip meter though they have the radio display on one of the displays. Seat then brought in the 20vt sport without the toys for £15995, most garages then badged them up as Cupras as some cars have the badges different sides.
Then the Cupra name came back and the 20vt sport was dropped not sure on the year though.

Have a look on your engine block to see which engine code you have. I didnt when I bought mine and am unlucky in the fact I have an APP engine code which means I dont have the KO3s turbo but just the standard K03 with a remap as the golf gti T

Hope this helps

Hmmmmm, so if all the above is true how comes my Sept 2000 X reg "sport" has cloth seats, no trip comp or any of the other toys mentioned ???

as IBD says the ones badged cupra had the toys and the sports didn't. mines a November 2000 Cupra and has all the toys - don't know how i'll go about replacing it when the time comes because there arn't many cars i can think of that well specced for similar money

app had ko3 turbo
later leons had k03s which holds boost a little longer through the rev range.

oh and seat were not too hot in changing sports to cupra on the V5s
cupras were effectively a uk thing.
they were rebadged sports.
some cupras, ie with leather hve sport on the V5. not a problem.

andy when you remapped yours was here much difference

for info on this, just think of it as chipping an ibiza. they have K03 turbos as standard.
they get good gains from a remap just not as much as a k03s.

figures of 195-205 bhp seen with K03 with about 245 lbft of torque.

add about 10 bhp for the K03s, with torque much the same.

Big Phil. I bought it from a guy in Manchester. He's a trade seller but the car has been in Leeds (where i live) according to the history.

It's Blue X reg.

Mine doesn't have any of the above (leather, Auto Wipers, Dimming Mirror). It does have the radio display on the clocks but thats about it.

I'm going to check this afternoon which engine code it is and I'll let you know.

Just checked my engine and it is a APP code so I guess it has the standard standard K03?

Yeah standard K03, you can pick K03s up for a couple of hundred quid and its pretty much a straight swap, with a few decent mods such as front mounted intercooler, 4 bar fuel pressure regulator and remap plus exhaust ans 100 cell race cat it could be pushing 235bhp which isnt all bad, but all that would cost near on 2k, which in my eyes isnt really worth the expense

well mines 2000 model, its app engine code but think it comes ko3s turbo as the actuator has one vacum line.
In also has folding electric mirrors which are rare option and key window closure as well. should be going in a for a custom code soon

Mine's got the folding electric mirrors (they don't work though) and the key window closure. How can I check if it has the ko3s turbo?

If the engine code is APP it has K03. If its AUQ it has K03S and variable valve timing.

Re your folding mirrors. Disconnect the battery for a few minutes then re-connect. 9 times out of 10 this "reminds" the car that the mirrors are supposed to fold. Remember you'll need your radio code after doing this.

Folding mirrors are not a rare option, they're standard on all Sports and Cupras.
