mighty mighty DALTON!!!!!
looking at trading my A3 in for either a 53 reg 1.2 or 1.4 16v ibiza. fuel economy is the main reason for change.
i recently joined the forces and have a 650 mile round trip to do when i want to go home.
in all honesty from your experiences how much would you expect that sort of trip to cost in £££.
Most of the trip is motorway and i drive at a pritty steady speed of about 80.

ever considered a dirty diesel im not a personal fan but for your needs the pd130 fr would be a good match for you. you'd get great fuel efficiency and they are pritty torquey and feel faster than the 1.2 and the 1.4 you can exspect to get 400miles to the full tank iirc for £40 <approx and when remapped can be even nippier

Ive got a mk4 on a '53 plate, its a 75bhp engine.

Mine gives be just over 32mpg every time, I get about 320-340 miles for ~44 litres of fuel. About 200 of those are on the motorway, the rest is in Birmingham start-stop traffic! But even if i do more motorway driving its hard to get above 34mpg ever. I spend about £30-35 a week on petrol.

Oh, and I drive at about 80-90mph on the motorway...im definately going for a derv next time, i would swap for a pd130 anyday! I still check autotrader for a good deal. You would save money in the long run! You could just go for an older one, with more mileage, you could get one for just less than £6.5k

Ditto.

I have the 1.2 and get about the same fuel consumption. If you're doing alot of motorway driving I wouldn't recommend it. The little engine doesnt really like it as to cruise at 80 the revs are at 4k and any little spurts will put it above that and getting close to the limiter, which is just silly.

I am also after a derv after 2 years of driving mine :)

You can get one for just over 5k aswell

edit: forgot, I actually managed to get *almost* 400 miles to the tank doing 90%motorway, but that was driving it to almost empty.

If you can stretch to the diesel I would. I do 520 miles/week commute and my previous Fiesta 1.4 Si was costing me a fortune. I was averaging just under 40mpg.
In my 130 TDi Sport, I average 55mpg and can quite wasily get 500 miles from a £37 fill-up.
The 100bhp version would be even more economical, I would expect 58mpg or so on a run, and they are nippy enough - very torquey on the motorway. I nearly went for one of these.

iv got a 1.2 and get about 200-220 miles out of a tank (all city driving)
I wasnt sure if there was a fault with the car or not, apparently SEAT arent allowed to say that its the way i drive. I find myself having to put my foot down to get anywhere. Im sure you woukd be better off with a diesel in the long-run

That's quite low...

What's the mileage on the car?

When I got mine it was on 17k I'd get about 240 max to a tank. Though I've changed my driving style a bit 35k later I'm used to 300.
