got a 51reg ibiza cupra just don't know what to go for - 17 or 18's. will be going on coilover's soon
any thoughts?

i was in the same predicament.......i ended up buying 17's, once they were fitted i knew with my coilies i could of had the 18's without any arch work.

Gearing stands a chance of being out with the 18's unless the tyre profiles are low enough to compensate but then you have ride comfort issues. Also extra strain on the power steering etc are all points to consider, they will look the danglies but looking back now.......im glad i went for 17's.

I personnaly think that 18's would be too big and you'll loose some of the handling. 17's are great but since i've gone back to my standard 16's i think the 16's handle better than the 17's did. So it depends if you want it more for the looks than anything else.

Try taking the wheels off your Massey Ferguson, but don't lower it too much else you won't be able to drive around your turnip farm.........:p

yep.........im basing my opinion from my own experiences, having had 16's when i first bought the car and then upgrading to 17's immediately made me aware of the handling difference.

Dont forget though, alot of the handling will be down to the specific tyre used on each application......i would hazard a guess that a 17" remould kingpin tyre would be complete pants and therefore, a 16" toyo or goodyear would be 100% better.

Also tyre width is a key factor aswell.....If a 16" rim was running a 185/50/16 i could also hazard a guess that a 215/40/17 will perform and handle better.

Then there is the suspension set-up which also adds to the handling capabilities.....................:whistle:

Yeah defintely. I had standard 6x16's on the car. Bought 7x17s TSW and handling improved. though now on 16's again and its much better. Though this maybe down to the fact i have 9" on the rears :lol:

Generally speaking it think 16s are good for track use. 17's fill the arches nicely though.
