flippy key questions

hi,

got my self a old VW flippy key. got key cut and replaced the blade. so that sorted. two things now...

1. how is the VW sign (size of 5p) stuck down? cos i cannot get it out!! well i have tryed using a knife and a flat screw driver!! no hope! :censored:

2. where abouts is the immobilizer in the spare seat key i have? what does it look like?! also where can it go in the VW flip key?! because once pulled apart there doesnt seam 2b no room. if any one has any pics or has done it b4 that would b a great help!

i have read a few threads on here but they all seam to go off subject!!

You're going to need to remove the VW badge somehow. It's stuck on with a little glue, so should prise off with some persistence.

Once the badge is removed it will reveal a screw. You undo that and prise the top half of the key apart (watch out that the spring for the flip mechanism doesn't fly across the room). Once you've opened it up you should see the transponder - it's in a little compartment by the bottom of the key blade.

You might be able to lever it out gently with a fine screwdriver, but they are very delicate and have a tendency to break! The again if you have a new one to put in there it's no big deal.

All you then need to do is put your new transponder in the compartment, and reassemble the key (which is the opposite of taking it apart, funnily enough).

If you haven't already done it, you might want to first check that you can match the remote to your car OK. It should be possible to do this without replacing the transponder (as the transponder is only for actually starting the car). I had a right mission with this bit, and if it turns out that you (like me) need to get a different remote, then you won't have to go through the transponder malarkey again, cos it's a pretty fiddly job.

harro, did not all Seat leons come with flippy keys then?

Not the mark 1s - I think some (if not all) of the mark 2s do though...

The transponder is a little glass tube with a tiny strip of copper inside. It's the same shape as a paracetemol capsule, but quite a bit smaller. I think if you do a search for transponder on here you'll find a few threads, including at least one with a picture.
