i am thinking about replacing my mk2 1.4 this year, but i am planning on moving out and getting a house so i am not sure which way it will go currently.

part of the reason is as my mk2 hits 80k its not running the way it should, not worringly or anything but idling and below 2k the revs are irratic but runs fine crusing at 60. i am thinking about getting it checked out at a local vag specialist cause it does need a service, also ask about the suspension as i have never been happy with the lack of feeling through that but anyway

my original plan was to get a mk4 tdi ibiza and having looked round, the ones i think i can look at in terms of price tend to be of a higher milage. what sort of milage should you stop looking at, as if i went down this road i would want the car to last me a few years

so what sort of milage should i be looking at for a 4-5 yr old tdi ibiza?

4 Years - 40000-48000
5 Years - 50000-60000

Based on 10-12k a year.

To be honest you can go a bit above this - the PD engines are bomb proof so shouldn't cause you any problems, but bear in mind wear on other parts.

Incidentally, the PD engines are considered to be fully 'run in' at 60k!!

Not sure what PD stands for but there is the PD130 engine in the 1.9TDI FR and the PD160 engine in the 1.9TDI Cupra.
Basically they're similar but the PD160 has more power, bigger air intake and stuff. Im sure someone on here will come with a better answer.

My beeza is just over 2 years old and has 45,000 miles on the clock. Would anybody buy it ? :)

all the mk4 tdi's are PD,
for a 4-5 year old car you'll be looking for a Sport which is the PD130.
This also has a 6 speed gearbox which is a dead giveaway differentiating it from the PD100 (unsure of when they released this) which has a 5 spd.

i think a some late mk3 TDIs are PD, but I'm sure someone will correct me.

I sold my '03 Ibiza TDI Sport (PD130) a year ago, after covering 80k miles in it, then engine sounded and performed as good as new.

I replaced it with a '51 plate Passat that already had 92k on it, and now has 120k, having had it remapped at 95-100k. A little tappety sounding for a couple of seconds at startup but otherwise performs well.
When I was looking for my Passat on Ebay I saw loads with 150k+ on them.

If you can find a high miler with full history that has spent it's life cruising on the motorway, go for it.

Mileage on these modern vehicles isn't a major issue like it used to be becuase they are built to such a high quality.

150k is nothing to these engines and they will do twice that before anything major needs doing to it as long as they are properly serviced and looked after
