To respray the door or not

Hey Guys,

Ive had my Ibiza FR for about two months now, I bought it from wiltshire and sons in Farnham.

When I picked it up it had a small chip on the door of which I made them touch up, a few weeks later I noticed this chip had reappeared!!!

I had a look more closely and the inside of the door was catching on a raised bit on the inside of the wing, I took it back to the dealer and they adjusted the door and said they would send some pics off to Seat to see if they could get permission to get the paint fixed under warrenty.

After about two weeks of them not getting in contact with me (rubbish service really) I called them and they said they had got permission to re-spray the door.

My questions to you is, as this is a chip (i mean no more than 5mm x 2mm) does it really require a respray? and would I be better off with just blagging a chip stick off them and doing it myself?

Whats putting me off is that they dont have a spray-shop in house, its about 5miles away, dont really want some guy from a spray shop thrashing the crap out of my new car.

All opinions welcome.

well if its free then I reckon you should have it done, also he wont be to thrash it about really over 5miles

If the door was catching on the wing I imagine the chip is on the front edge of the door. How noticeable was it after it was repaired the first time? If it didn't show up too much and the original problem has been sorted I would rather have a decent repair to the chip than have the whole door resprayed.

People in the know will always be able to spot a resprayed panel and it will look more suspicious when you come to sell the car in the future. I'm sure dealers would knock more off the price of the car for a resprayed panel than a chip repair. Just my personal opinion of course.

I discovered a small chip on the trailing edge of my door a couple of days after I picked my new car up. It had been spotted in with touch up paint and I decided not to demand a respray for the above reasons. I just keep an eye on it now to make sure it's not deteriorating and you have to look very hard to notice it.

It is a free respray but there isnt another mark on that side of the car, what if the guy does a crappy job of blending the paint in!!

To be honest im not that happy about a third party company driving my car, surely a seat guy should run the car up to the spray shop!

they won't rev the tits off it if thats what your worrying about. also, they drive probably hundreds if not thousands of cars a year so I don't see why they would cane yours! no offence.. people get sued all too easily these days - I had body damage work done to mine via a 3rd party company and it was fine. Get it done via warranty and let them sort it for ya then your done and no more worries! quick, cheap and easy!

Well its all booked in for next friday now, I will reset the trip before I hand it in anyway just to make sure i know if someone goes for a jolly in it.

From the comment that they will be doing hundreds of cars a year--- to be honest I doubt seat do many warrenty re-sprays and I bet most of the body shop companies work gets brought to them.

I am prob being over protective of my new baby,,,,

what colour is the car if its a metalic i would have the chip done if its a base colour might consider having it painted

Its black magic (metallic), are there problems with painting metallic cars?

not realy a problem but its a lot harder to match a metalic because of flake size direction of spray etc though they may just flat down the clear coat touch up the chip if its not that visable then re clear coat it.

Might ask them when they phone up about the courtesy car.

Hmmmm well I agree to a point with Simon34 when repairing lighter metallics, on a black or any dark metallic car they would have to be pretty bad to mess it up, I wouldnt worry too much, your main concern is how they match the laquer texture on the factory finish if its too orange peel, get them to flat it again
