Intermittent Brake Problem - advice please

Hi all

I got my new 130 TDI Sport 3 weeks ago and think it's great. However, I'm having problems with the brakes and thought I'd post here for a bit of advice before ringing the dealer tomorrow.

Sometimes, the brakes feel really fine and positive but occasionally, they don't seem to respond very well at all and even with my foot to the floor it seems not to want to stop (pretty scary at the roundabout).

Anyone got any suggestions?

i know people do the big brake upgrade as they feel the brakes are not good enough

could be that, could be the road surface as well

is this after you have done a fair bit of breaking as tey fade pretty quick, lots of people put the audi tt braes on the front and they are better but if you think its dangerouse as such take it to the dealer and get it checked out

have to say the brakes on my 1.2 are very good, but they are new pads and 1.2 aint dead fast anyway

my 1.4 brakes are awsome really but for 75bhp dont need a lot of stopping power lol

i have to say i thought the brakes on my mums 1.4 dab were better than my FRs

I don't think that they're fading from lots of use really. Sometimes they feel great, others not so great and once or twice barely there.

It's tricky as if I'm going to make a warrenty claim, I need to figure out how to make it happen when they take it for a drive. My boyfriend has had a drive too and thinks the brakes are very tempremental.

Anyway - off to take it for a long drive on some country roads to see if I can get a better idea of when it happens. Then a call to the stealer.

What kind of mileage is it on ?

There's always a chance of a servo fault, or a leak in the vacuum lines feeding the servo. Am trying to get to the bottom of a similar problem on my Passat!

doubt it would be anything like air getting into the lines, might just be the pads I would have a look and if they looked bad, possibly go for some sport brake pads see if they help

if they work different at the same sort of breaking force i would say its the brake system not the pads or disks. if you are going to try them out be carful and dont push it to hard incase hey arnt working properly

I find it curious that some Ibiza and VRS owners are clearly unhappy with their brakes yet others (like me) thnk they are fine even when worked hard

I presume there must have been a couple of different pad materials supplied as I have to say mine are great unless they have really been punished to make them start fading

I don't find that lukey - my last car was a '99 16v Polo and ABS kicked in for the slightest thing - with my Ibiza, I had to really hammer it to make sure they worked, even on a damp road.

Got the dealer coming round in a min to pick up my car and give it a once over on the brakes - hopefully will be sorted soon - I'll keep you posted.

In addition, I'm having to get them to look at a grinding noise when I reverse sometimes and also the fact that the airbag light is permanently on.

(Hmm, airbag not working and brakes iffy! Not a good combination!)

I've found that to be the case as well...f*****g irriatating sometimes. very strange brakes! gonna upgrade soon anyway to TT's - can't wait!

What calipers come with these? 4-pots?

i worked out its actually cheaper to replace the brakes with TTs than to get a decent set of discs and pads in the current setup, that includes telling insurance and their charge for me being honest then giving me the bullsh!t "standard parts replacement" clause, dicks

Must admit I find the brakes on the whole to be good - I like the progressive feel of them and they can certainly stop you in a hurry if you need them to.

I agree with Lukey though that the ABS can be very intrusive - way too sensitive
